Course summary

Why study Biological Sciences with us? The biological sciences are a rapidly advancing discipline that studies all aspects of life. Breakthroughs in the field transform individual lives and communities and help tackle global challenges. This course provides graduates with knowledge to contribute at all levels of biological organisation, from molecular to cellular, and from organism to ecosystem. The course has a strong practical focus. Through authentic hands-on research in our state-of-the-art laboratories and using the advanced IT setup, you will develop problem solving and critical thinking skills and gain expertise in the handling of ‘big data’. The course offers different exit awards. This allows you to specialise in either molecular or environmental biology, areas that are in clear need of specialists. What will you learn? This course gives you a solid foundation in the underlying principles of biology and develops your practical skills through laboratory-based experiments and problem-based learning. You will use industry-standard analysis facilities and technology, guided by research-active academics who will help you develop your final-year research project. Additionally, you will have opportunities to enhance your learning and field experience by joining field trips, as well as collaborating and contributing to research team activities through volunteering schemes. How do we support your career development? The Biological Sciences BSc Honours offers you diverse career opportunities depending on your chosen specialisation. You can find roles in biotech, genomics, pharmaceuticals, academic research, environmental consultancies, NGOs, and education. Some of you may pursue further studies. Many graduates advance to postgraduate programs at institutions like Middlesex University, Imperial College, UCL, Oxford, and Cambridge, or international universities such as the University of Amsterdam. You could secure positions at research institutions, charities like Cancer Research UK, public bodies such as National Rail, government organisations including DEFRA, and biotech firms like Novogene, demonstrating strong preparation for a broad range of life sciences careers. Introducing our new Learning Framework After working with our students to gather feedback on what they love most about our courses, we’re making some changes to how we structure and teach our programmes for the start of the 2024/25 academic year. You can find more information about how this course is affected by viewing the relevant course information sheet on our Learning Framework page: https://www.mdx.ac.uk/study/learning-framework/

Modules

You will have the option to specialise your degree, depending on the modules you take in year 2 and 3. You will be able to graduate with either BSc Biological Sciences, BSc Biological Sciences (Molecular Biology) or BSc Biological Sciences (Environmental Biology). Year 1 – Environmental Biology and Molecular Biology: Cell Sciences and Genetics (30 credits) - Compulsory Skills for Scientists (30 credits) - Compulsory Fundamentals of Biochemistry (30 credits) - Compulsory Form and Function (30 credits) – Compulsory Year 2 - Environmental Biology and Molecular Biology: Biodiversity and the Tree of Life (30 credits) - Compulsory Molecular Biology and Gene Control (30 credits) - Compulsory Research Methods and Science Innovation (30 credits) - Compulsory Environmental Biology: Environmental Protection (30 credits) - Optional Molecular Biology: Applied Microbiology and Immunology (30 credits) – Compulsory Year 3 - Environmental Biology and Molecular Biology: Dissertation (30 credits) – Compulsory Informatics for Bioscientists (30 credits) – Compulsory Work Experience 1 (30 credits) – Optional Environmental Biology: Clinical Nutrition (30 credits) – Optional Molecular Biology: Biotechnology (30 credits) – Compulsory Optional Year 3 Thin Sandwich (If you choose the Year 3 Thin Sandwich option, your final year will be year four.) - The year-long placement is an opportunity for you to work in an industrial, field or laboratory-based setting gaining important and relevant skills related to their biology degree programme. The module aims to enhance your employability skills, embed transferable and graduate skills and enable you to reflect on how the knowledge gained is relevant to their degree programme and the field of biology. Through the work placement you will gain experience of working in a team, facilitate your understanding of the workplace and enhance your skills of self-reliance and communication, self-expression and co-operation. Year 4 - Environmental Biology and Molecular Biology: Dissertation (30 credits) – Compulsory Informatics for Bioscientists (30 credits) – Compulsory Clinical Nutrition (30 credits) – Optional Work Experience 1 (30 credits) – Optional Environmental Biology: Conservation, Restoration and Reconciliation (30 credits) – Compulsory Molecular Biology: Biotechnology (30 credits) – Compulsory
