Course summary

Structure Christ the Redeemer’s undergraduate programmes combine academic study and practice. The BA in Theology programmes prepares students for future leadership and ministry roles (in church or community-based settings) through developing their knowledge and understanding of Christian theology and enabling them to apply that knowledge in a professional / ministry context. It also seeks to develop their capacity for leadership and for working collaboratively and to have acquired the academic skills necessary for successful completion of the programme at level 6 and for future postgraduate study. The programme is based around five pathways: Ministerial leadership; Counselling; Entrepreneurship; Media Culture; and Youth Ministry and Music. At level 5 there is compulsory placement module, which can be extended through students undertaking the work-based research project at level 6. Pathway Overview This pathway offers an integrated approach to the study of theology and counselling. Christ the Redeemer College has many years of experience in offering counselling training – both as a stand-alone vocational training programme and in the context of formal theological education, including as one of the pathways in the suite of undergraduate programmes that were previously validated by Middlesex University. Content Through this programme students engage with theology, biblical studies, ministry studies and one of the five pathway options (outlined above) as well as the academic competencies required of higher education programmes. Students develop their self-awareness, understanding of community and contemporary culture, which when combined with opportunities for work-based learning enables them to develop and extend their leadership capacity. Students progressively develop knowledge, understanding, skills and behaviours and critically reflect of their personal formation and development, including through the application of a range of Personal Development Planning (PDP) approaches. The programme is compliant with the National Occupational Standards for the role of Church Minister which is approved by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education and recognised by a range of Christian denominations in the UK. Skills Upon successful completion of the programme, students will have developed a portfolio of experiences, learning and skills, and have extended their capacity as leaders and competency in the professional practice linked to their chosen study pathway. They are also able to communicate effectively in a range of written and presentation forms, reflecting critically on their own ministry practice and that of others, and having the ability to think and work independently.

Modules

In each year of study, students will combine core modules that are common to all pathways with specific modules that relate to their chosen pathway. Core modules (All Pathways) Study Skills and Personal Development Planning (Level 4) This module is designed to prepare and support students to study effectively for their degree programme and produce coursework assessments to undergraduate standards. Introduction to Biblical Theology (Level 4) This module aims to introduce students to the nature and purpose of biblical theology. It will explore the Bible’s central integrating themes from God’s perspective and His relationship with humanity and especially His people. Introduction to Practical Theology and Ethics (Level 4) This module aims to enable students to explore the inter-relationships between the Bible, practical theology, Christian ministry and ethics. Systematic Theology (Level 5) This module aims to develop understanding of the nature and content of Systematic theology and to foster a detailed knowledge of the main doctrinal aspects of the Christian faith. Hermeneutics (Level 5) This module aims to introduce students to biblical interpretation within the framework of the Old and New Testaments. It includes exegesis and hermeneutics, equipping students to examine the original meaning of the Bible and the contemporary significance of biblical texts. Placement Module (Level 5) This module aims to complement students’ academic studies by providing vocational insight through practical experience in a church, community, or ministry environment. Research Methods (Level 5) This module provides the student with an understanding of research principles and a range of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies used in academic research. Cross-Cultural Mission and Ministry (Level 6) This module explores the cultural foundations and contexts for ministry. Pastoral Theology and Pastoral Care (Level 6) This module aims to explore the scope and practice of pastoral ministry in the Christian church. Major project options (All pathways – Level 6) Dissertation This module aims to further develop students’ independent study and research skills and to enable them to demonstrate original and critical thought. Work-Based Research Project The work-based research project module aims to provide students with the opportunity to undertake an in-depth research project of a key issue that is relevant to a work placement that the student undertakes. The module therefore builds upon the placement at Level 5. Students will spend a minimum of 100 hours in the workplace at Level 6 and will agree a brief for the project with both their College Supervisor and the organisation in which the student is undertaking the placement. Optional Modules (Theology and Ministerial Leadership) Ministerial Leadership: Theory and Skills (Level 4) This module aims to introduce students to an overview of the theological and practical issues relevant to the concept of ministerial leadership today. It examines various leadership styles and skills. Apologetics and Missiology (Level 5) This module enables students to explore the fundamental issues in the study of apologetics and subsequently apply apologetic methodology to contemporary challenges to the Christian faith. Homiletics (Level 5) This module introduces the student to the study of the communication process in various contexts, including cross-cultural contexts. Applied Pentecostal Theology (Level 6) The course is an overview of Pentecostalism and will address the dynamics that led to the rise of the Pentecostal movement around the world. Apostolic Ministry (Level 6) This module explores these traditions and practices particularly as embedded in the Pentecostal tradition and evaluates their expression in the church today. It will also explore how today’s church can enhance the propagation of the gospel through the expression of these traditions and practices.
