Course summary

This Level 6 Top-up degree programme is a fantastic opportunity for all candidates with a Level 5 qualification to top it up to a bachelor’s degree. The one-year Full Time study (or 2-year Part Time) leads to the award of BSc (Hons) in Computing degree which opens doors to lucrative job opportunities within the IT Industry. This programme is designed to equip learners with the knowledge, high-level cognitive skills and familiarity with tools and techniques that empowers them to become highly productive and competitive in the job market. You will develop the ability to apply creative and innovative thinking for implementing logical solutions to problem scenarios within and outside digital domains. The lecturing team consist of highly qualified and experienced practitioners who are dedicated to ensuring students success through effective curriculum delivery and pastoral support. Most of the current lecturers have had relevant industry experience in IT and they are educated to at least Masters level in Computer Science disciplines. Yeovil College University Centre is one of the few Institute of Technology (IoT) institutions in the UK and the Computing department boasts of modernised IT infrastructure, updated classroom equipment, high-spec gaming room and a modernised IT Lab/Workshop that is equipped with state of art Servers, Storage Area Network and virtualised environment for students’ lab activities. This is a top up to Level 6 course, equivalent in level to the third year of an undergraduate degree. After the Course Successful completion of this top-up programme will lead to the award of a Bachelor of Science degree - BSc (Hons) Computing awarded by the University of Gloucestershire. This degree opens doors of opportunities to lucrative IT Jobs in Software Developer, Networking Engineer, IT Consultancy, Web Application Developer etc. Graduates from this programme acquire strong technical and academic knowledge to confidently take on high-level job roles and management positions.

Modules

Learners will benefit from a combination of tutor-led sessions, lectures, group discussions, seminars and research symposiums. The learning environment is rich with technology tools both in the physical learning space and our Virtual Learning Environments (VLE). Lessons are packed with hands-on practical activities and use of simulation software to familiarise learners with collaborative development and teamwork. For each 15 Credits module, students will have about 45 contact hours of tutor-led sessions and are expected to engage in about 105 Independent Guided Learning Hours. We are a Cisco Academy, Microsoft Academy, Juniper Academy and Unity Academy. We use our academy status to enrich the curriculum by injecting vendor qualifications into our programme delivery. Students are encouraged to complete industry-recognised vendor certifications during their programme of study (e.g. Juniper JNCIA, Cisco Security, Cisco CCNA, Microsoft Azure, MTA, MCSA etc.). You will study six modules in total, all of which are listed below: • Advanced Networking & Security (30 Credits) • Advanced Programming (15 Credits) • Research Methods (15 Credits) • User Experience Design (15 Credits) • Web Application Development (15 Credits) • Dissertation (30 Credits) Detailed information about these modules and the curriculum staff delivering them in the programme handbook.

Assessment method

Varied forms of formative and summative assessments activities are used throughout the programme – these may include essays, practical tasks, presentations, assignment reports, time-constrained assessments etc. Graded assessments (summative) for the programme modules are mainly by Coursework. These may include a portfolio of written assignment reports, practical activities and presentations.

Qualification requirements

Our typical offer is 240 academic credits (CAT points) at level 5 in Computing or a relevant field (for example, Higher National Diploma (HND), Foundation Degree in Science (FdSc) or Diploma of Higher Education (DipHE)). Applicants will be invited to attend an admission interview and will be advised of the criteria in advance. We welcome applications from mature students (aged 21 and over as of 1st September in the academic year of admission) and do not necessarily require the same academic qualifications as school leaving applicants. They may be considered for admission if they possess industry experience and other professional qualifications that are comparable to the standard Level 5 entry requirements. English language requirements

International applicants will be required to evidence English language skills - this could be an IELTS score of 6.5, with a minimum score of 6.0 in writing and 5.5 in each other component, a grade 4 in GCSE English (or equivalent).
