Course summary

The business of fashion is complex, and with our BA (Hons) Fashion Business degree you’ll learn the essential skills needed for a successful career in fashion retail. You’ll develop a comprehensive understanding of the fashion retail business landscape, learn how different departments collaborate to achieve business goals, and explore the commercial, ethical and financial factors that affect brands. Through lectures, seminars, tutorials, workshops and projects, you’ll develop the essential management, leadership, analytical and communication skills required to succeed in the fashion industry. You will:

  • Learn the leadership qualities and entrepreneurial skills needed to start your own fashion business
  • Be assigned a personal industry mentor to work with throughout the course
  • Develop the technical, research, creative and analytical skills needed for a business-focused role in the fashion retail industry
  • Examine the rise of technology, sustainability and corporate social responsibility and how these affect the industry at all levels
  • Learn about the diversity and complexity of the international fashion business and how to use data analytics in decision-making
  • Understand how sustainability, corporate responsibility and technology affect the industry at a strategic and operational level
  • Work on live projects set by our brand partners and complete work placements with our industry partners
  • Complete a self-directed Personal Professional Project that allows you to demonstrate your skills and knowledge, and contextualise these in alignment with your career goals

Modules

Throughout the course you’ll develop the technical, analytical and creative skills needed for a career in fashion retail. You’ll learn through a mix of classes and lectures, individual study, creative projects and industry enrichment that is integrated throughout the course in the form of masterclasses, live projects, mentorship schemes and work placements. Year One The first year of study is focused on developing your understanding of the fashion business environment, leadership and management skills, such as analytical thinking, communication and effective research and data analysis. You’ll be introduced to the fundamentals of financial, social and environmental conditions in which businesses function, and explore product strategy and the fashion cycle. Modules:

Year Two In your second year of study, you’ll investigate microeconomic theory in relation to the fashion industry and explore concepts around scarcity and resource allocation. You’ll undertake an individualised project that allows you to showcase your professional knowledge and skills. For the live project, you’ll work with a brand and incorporate industry experience through a project focusing on brands and communication. Modules:

English language requirements

If English isn't your first language, we'll need to see academic proof of your level of written and spoken English. We require a minimum International English language testing system (IELTS) score of 6.0 (or recognised equivalent*). This test must have been taken no earlier than two years before you start at the Fashion Retail Academy. *Recognised equivalents include: Trinity (taken in the UK) - 111, Cambridge ESOL Exams - CAE or FCE, Cambridge English - scale 176, or Common European Framework - C1 or C2
