Course summary
The BSc Veterinary Nursing programme is a full-time four-year course designed to produce veterinary nurses who have the knowledge and skills to make a significant contribution to animal health and welfare. You will complete 2100 hours of practical training within the first three foundation years of the programme, where you have the opportunity to develop your knowledge and skills within a real-life environment. At the end of this period (providing you have met the assessment requirements), you will achieve your professional veterinary nursing qualification, accredited by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS). During your final year, you will undertake a research project on an area of clinical interest and choose from a range of innovative modules taught by RVC nurse educators and world-renowned clinicians from the Queen Mother Hospital for Animals. This is a challenging degree course that delivers a broad programme of learning, and offers a fascinating introduction to veterinary nursing.

Interview
All applicants to this course must attend an interview if invited and cannot receive an offer without attending an interview. Interviews usually take place at our Hawkshead campus, normally in mid-February, however in February 2021 and 2022 interviews were conducted online due to the Covid-19 pandemic. At present we cannot confirm how and where interviews will take place in 2023, but the requirement to attend an interview before an offer can be issued will still stand. Invitations to interview are sent by email around 2-3 weeks before the interview date. Once issued, applicants are required to respond to their interview invitation by email within 5 working days. If invited, it may not be possible to rearrange an interview for a different date, so applicants must ensure they are available for interview before applying and inform us by email of any specific days when they are unavailable. Please note that if you apply to more than one of our Veterinary Nursing courses and your application progresses to the interview stage, you will be invited to attend one interview only which will be used in our assessment of each of your applications.
Other
Prior work experience is required in order to develop animal handling skills and obtain an insight into the work of a veterinary nurse. To enter onto the course, applicants must have completed at least two weeks (70 hours) in a veterinary practice and two weeks (70 hours) in other animal environments (e.g. kennels, cattery, animal shelter, farm, stables, zoo, pet shop, etc.). To be considered for interview, you must have completed at least two weeks of work experience, with at least one of these being in a small animal or mixed veterinary practice, by 1 February 2023. Applicants who satisfy our preliminary academic requirements will be sent a Work Experience Form to complete in order for us to gain more information about their work experience placements. Applicants successful in reaching the interview stage will be required to provide references to support the information given on this form.
