Course summary
During your first two years, you will get a solid grounding in key concepts in the two disciplines – from the level 1 Global Challenges module (Politics) to Dynamic Human Worlds: Society, Culture, Economy (Geography) and International Relations (Politics) at level 2. You will also be able to choose other subjects alongside your two core areas – from History to Psychology to a language, or a range of other subjects. In your third and fourth years, you will normally take an equally balanced number of more advanced modules in Politics (or International Relations) and Geography. Each lecturer focuses on teaching specialist areas in which they have an established track record of research. In Politics and International Relations (P&IR), current optional modules cover Russian, Irish and Middle Eastern politics, nations and nationalism, political theories, human rights, and humanitarian intervention. Modules covering illegal drugs, gender and sexuality, environmental sustainability, and surveillance are also currently available. In your third year, you must choose a Geography module from a specified list that allows you to emphasise either human or physical geography and at the same time develop your research skills. In level 4 you can choose from the full range of modules available in both P&IR and Geography and, further emphasising the flexibility of the degree, whilst a dissertation is compulsory you can elect to take it in either of your two subjects.
