Course summary

During the last decade, the hotel and hospitality industry in both the UK and globally has undergone an unprecedented period of growth; the industry requires graduates with Hotel Management training to prepare them for a career in the sector. Employability is at the heart of our programmes. As well as hospitality specific skills, the programmes have modules that embed transferable skills of innovation, dealing with unexpected events, resilience, personal initiative and responsibility, problem solving and creativity, reflective practice and the development of an enterprising mind-set. The learning strategy for the programmes requires BA students to complete six workplace practice/work experience modules to rehearse their professional practice skills in real world environments. BA students will have the opportunity to undertake a year’s internship, at either one or two hospitality establishments, between levels 5 and 6. All staff teaching on the programmes have close links with industry, and many are former employees of hotels themselves. The course continuously evolves in accordance with feedback from industry, and one of our strongest relationships is with the Marriott corporation. There are multiple programme durations: • Standard: three academic year programme of full-time study and up to six years part-time. • Non-standard: two academic year accelerated programme of full-time study and up to four years part-time. The pattern of full-time delivery varies depending on programme duration: • Standard three year: Three terms per academic year. Full-time students will study 40-credits worth of modules per academic term. Within a term, the modules run in parallel with each other. • Non-standard accelerated two year: Three terms per academic year. Full-time students will study 60-credits worth of modules per academic term. Within a term, the modules run in parallel with each other.

Year 2 - Level 5 (Dip HE & BA) • Financial Management for the Hotel Industry (20 credits) • Foreign Languages and Cultural Awareness (20 credits) • Entrepreneurship (20 credits) • Personnel Resourcing and Development (20 credits) • Management and Organisational Behaviour (20 credits) • Sustainable Hospitality and Tourism Management (20 credits). Year 3 - Level 6 (BA) • Hotel Placement Project (30 credits) • Managing Food and Beverage Operations (10 credits) • Managing Guest Service Operations (10 credits) • Managing Hotel Administration (10 credits) • International Meetings Management for the Hotel Industry (20 credits) • Contemporary Themes in the Hotel and Hospitality Sector (20 credits) • Organisational Consultancy (20 credits). All modules are compulsory.

Assessment method

Exams are not heavily used in the programmes because the assessment focus is on the rehearsal of activities typically undertaken in the hotel and hospitality environment. Assessment includes written assignments, reports and practical assessments that test knowledge, understanding and cognitive skills but with an emphasis on the development of practical and key (transferable) skills that mirror the skills that the students will require when they enter the workplace following completing of their respective courses. Coursework and practical tasks are set in a variety of formats. These include: • Practical in-class exercises (e.g. debate seminars) • Role play (e.g. mock interviews, customer focussed scenarios etc.) • Presentations • Learning Logs – either completed on placement or in practical in-house sessions • Research projects • Peer mentoring • Video critique • Essays • Reports • Work experience placement assessments.

Additional fee information

It is essential that all students have access to a laptop or desktop device for online learning and suitable width broadband. During this degree, students will have the opportunity to attend several field trips within the UK and abroad. We attempt to keep the costs of field trips as low as possible and many are significantly subsidised by the University. Costs to students for UK trips are no more than £100 during the academic year. For overseas trips we aim to keep the cost below £500 and attendance on these will be optional. For field trips abroad, students will have the opportunity to pay for them in staged payments to lessen the financial burden. We normally expect the final payment for a field trip to be made four weeks prior to the field trips taking place.
