Course summary

If you're a graduate looking for a rewarding career as a registered Learning Disabilities nurse, our innovative Master's in Nursing will help you achieve your goals. Becoming a learning disabilities nurse requires a unique blend of sensitivity and skill. This MSc course offers clinical placements and a varied and engaging glimpse into the many possibilities for future careers. Lessons on-campus take place in simulated wards in addition to lecture theatres and are taught by a first-class team of highly skilled, expert lecturers. Your clinical placements provide an opportunity to put your theoretical learning into practice, working alongside highly skilled and experienced LD nurses at the cutting edge of patient care. You will experience the work of specialist services - from community nursing teams and emergency departments to on-going care services for children with long term and complex needs, including end-of-life care. All nursing students on courses from September 2020 will benefit from guaranteed, additional support of at least £5,000 a year, which they will not need to pay back. • Nursing and Midwifery at Greenwich is number one in London for satisfaction with teaching (Guardian League Tables 2021).
  • We arrange clinical placements with local NHS Trusts allowing you to learn alongside experienced professionals and satisfy the requirements of EU Directives.
  • The course will have joint approval for the University of Greenwich and the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
"Like all universities, the University of Greenwich must develop our pre-registration nursing and midwifery courses in line with the requirements as stated in the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s (2018) standards framework for nursing and midwifery education. These standards underpin all education for nurses, midwives and nursing associates to ensure courses reflect the safety and needs of the public, the profession and our students. To do this we have a schedule of programme re-approvals, and this course and the module content is currently subject to this review process. We anticipate this to be finalised by Jan 2021 and will consult you of any further changes should they arise before the start date.”

Health checks

An important part of many of our Health programmes is the opportunity to learn on placement and work with patients, service users and their families. On all our programmes leading to a professional accreditation with either the NMC or HCPC, placement in a health or social care setting is a compulsory learning outcome of the programme which cannot be delivered or achieved in another way. However, you should be aware that from 1 April 2022, all NHS and Social Care personnel (including students) will be required to have completed an approved course of vaccinations against Covid-19 before they can be deployed in roles that involve face-to-face contact with patients/service users. This measure has been taken to protect the public, patients and staff. Limited medical exemptions may apply but will depend on the decision of providers’ occupational health teams, who are expected to take a very strict approach. If you are unable, or unwilling, to be vaccinated at this time, and cannot satisfy our placement providers that you are medically exempt, we will not be able to provide you with the practice placements necessary to complete your health and social care degree. If this is the case, you may wish to look at an alternative programme or career path.
