Applied Sciences (Chemistry) at City of Liverpool College University Centre - UCAS

Course summary

This one-year, full-time course in Applied Sciences provides students with practical laboratory skills and theoretical knowledge required for employment or further study in different science-related contexts. Students can choose between pathways in Biology or Chemistry and will study a mixture of core and specialist units. A variety of teaching methods are employed for the delivery of the course units. These include, tutorials, group work, research and presentations, practical experiments, visits, and ecological surveys. The different methods employed have been devised to promote students’ academic development and confidence as scientists. This is achieved through the development of not only practical and technical skills, but also through the development of mathematical, analytical, critical thinking and evaluative skills.

Modules studied: • Fundamentals of Laboratory Techniques • Scientific Data Handling Approaches • Regulation and Quality in the Applied Sciences • Sample and Sample Preparation • Inorganic Chemistry • Organic Chemistry • Physical Chemistry • Work-based investigation Optional Units are to be confirmed.

Assessment method

The programme is assessed through the submission of assignments, practical work, reports, essays and an independent project. Formative feedback will support student progression in both written work and technical outcomes. Self and peer assessment in convener/critique situations is an essential element of all projects and feedback from these will enhance student achievement and progression.
