Modern Languages and History

Course summary

On this programme you will study History alongside a language (Chinese, French, German, Italian or Spanish, from beginners or advanced level). You’ll develop written and oral skills and will learn about cultural aspects, including national histories. You can choose from a range of topics from medieval to contemporary history. This joint course History will impart a solid knowledge of different nations in a variety of historical periods, equipping you with transferable skills highly sought after by employers. All language modules include written skills (e.g. translation and essay writing) and oral skills taught by a native speaker. Optional modules in Modern Languages allow you to gain insight into the cinema, literature, history, and culture of the country whose language you are studying. The modules available in History will sit well alongside Modern Languages modules, and enable you to focus on a wide variety of time periods, geographical areas and themes. This will enable you to follow modules that focus on the history of Wales, Britain, and Europe, as well as that of other areas. There are also extra-curricular activities that will both boost your subject knowledge and allow you to get to know your fellow students. These include cultural and social events organised by student-run societies in the academic departments. In addition, Pontio – Bangor University’s Arts and Innovation Centre – means that there will be a range of plays, films and other performances only a short walk away from where many of your classes will be taking place. ‘Placement Year’ and 'International Experience Year’ options are available for this course. You will have the opportunity to fully consider these options when you have started your course at Bangor and can make an application for a transfer onto such a pathway at the appropriate time. You can find more information about these options on our website and if you have any questions, please get in touch. If you don’t have the required qualifications for this degree-level course or are looking to re-enter education after time away from study, then a Foundation Year Programme might be the right choice for you. Please see Modern Languages (with Foundation Year) R808 or History (with Foundation Year) V10F.
