The course provides a broad and thorough education in Graphic Design enabling our graduates to understand and contribute to our visual culture in professional, imaginative ways. The programme produces highly employable graduates who are well prepared for work in the creative industries, whether this is in private practice, a design studio, a publishing house, a local authority, education, a museum, a charity, or the emerging digital industries. The professional opportunities for well-trained and educated Graphic Designers are broad and varied. The course experience is one of belonging and fun. It does, however, create a demanding atmosphere which encourages our students to think independently and question the world around them and their role as a visual communicator. We recruit 35 to 40 students per year, which is large enough to generate lots of energy, but small enough not to preclude individual tuition and personal attention. It is essential that we get to know and understand the needs of each student. When nurturing creativity to generate effective design solutions, it is our belief that transformation occurs best when we have a clear understanding of who you are, what you want and working out how you are going to get there. This working relationship enables you to pursue your individual goals and personal interests, whether in the fields of corporate graphics and brand identity, publishing, design for print, packaging, web design or motion graphics. Driven by industry standards and supported by state-of–the-art technologies, we produce award-winning and highly employable graduates. Our industry reputation of producing excellent graduates means high employment rates from our course. Future graduates are often sought after before they get to end of their degree. Links with business and industry are an essential ingredient of the programme and are maintained and developed through ‘live’ projects, work placements, visiting professionals and educational visits.

Course details

The teaching and learning style is project led and this is supported by skills-based workshops to help you enhance your technical studies and creative enquiry. The industry-standard software packages on the Apple Macs are all taught within the modules. This ensures that all students have the relevant skills as they progress through the course. There is a variety of content and timescales for our projects: sometimes they can be an hour long, a day long or completed over several weeks. We encourage active participation and pride ourselves on providing plenty of constructive feedback.

Assessment method

All work is assessed formatively, on an ongoing basis. Weekly verbal discussion is encouraged. Summative assessment is made for each module at the end of each academic year.
