Course summary

The HNC in Health Care Practice is a qualification designed and developed to meet professional standards. The HNC helps to develop not only academic skills and abilities, but also work readiness skills. It is recognised by employers and universities. This is a work-related qualification for students taking their first steps into employment or those already in employment and seeking career development opportunities. The HNC provides progression into the workplace either directly or via study at university and it is also designed to meet employer’s needs. Higher National qualifications are widely recognised by industry and higher education as the principal technical professional qualification. At level 4, the HNC is recognised as being the same level as a first year UK Honours degree. The content is stimulating and provides an exciting experience equipping learners with skills for the future world of Healthcare.

Modules

Core units The Higher National qualification is made up of 7 units of study. This qualification is directly mapped to apprenticeship core standards. This means that all units studied on this course are core units. You will study units including: Unit 1 – Law, Policy and ethical practice in Health and Social care Unit 2 – Demonstrating Professional principles and values in Health and Social care practice Unit 3 – Supporting the Individual journey through integrated Health and Social care Unit 4 – Fundamentals of evidence based practice (Pearson set project) Unit 5 – Health education in Action Unit 7 – Effective Healthcare practice using Maths Unit 9 – Anatomy and Physiology for Health and ill Health

Assessment method

Assessment Assessment methods are varied and include practice based assessment. This may take place in a work placement setting or in our dedicated clinical skills lab where you will have access to a hospital ward with interactive manikins and health care equipment You will also be required to complete at least 200 hours in placement or employment within a Health Care setting alongside your course.

Entry requirements

Qualification requirements

You will need to have successfully completed studies at level 3. You should also hold at least a GCSE grade C or equivalent in English and you should have some experience of working either voluntarily or in employment within the health and social care sector. BTEC Higher Nationals are a suitable option for anyone progressing from Level 3 study. Learners may have completed A-levels, a BTEC National or another equivalent qualification. Learners may come straight from Level 3 study, or have spent time in the workplace.
