Course summary

Are you a student from the UK interested in studying Materials Science but your personal or educational circumstances have meant you are unlikely to achieve the grades typically required for Oxford courses? If so, then choosing to apply for Materials Science with Foundation Year might be the course for you. The Foundation Year is completely free for students and is designed to be a one-year intensive academic course which will bridge any gap between school and our academically challenging undergraduate courses. The programme is carefully designed to build and develop your study skills, subject knowledge and capacity for independent study. Students that pass the course will be awarded a nationally recognised Certificate in Higher Education (CertHE) qualification. If you pass the course at the required level, you will be automatically admitted into Oxford as an undergraduate student if you wish to be, without the need to re-apply. For more information on this course please visit www.ox.ac.uk/fyps Materials Science is an interdisciplinary subject, spanning the physics and chemistry of matter, engineering applications and industrial manufacturing processes. Modern society is heavily dependent on advanced materials, for example, lightweight composites for faster vehicles, optical fibres for telecommunications and silicon microchips for the information revolution. Materials scientists study the relationships between the structure and properties of a material and how it is made. They also develop new materials and devise processes for manufacturing them. Materials Science is vital for developments in nanotechnology, quantum computing, batteries and nuclear fusion, as well as medical technologies such as bone replacement materials. Qualification requirements

GCSE-level Chemistry, or an equivalent, is also required. It is highly desirable to have Chemistry to A-level or equivalent, and if it is not studied to this level it is strongly recommended that it is studied to AS-level or equivalent. For candidates studying Maths, Physics, Chemistry and FM to A-level, normally our conditional offer will require ABB in the first three (the A in any of these) and an expectation that you continue to study FM; an analogous offer will apply if instead of FM you are studying a different A-level in addition to the first three. We expect you to have taken and passed any practical component in your chosen science subjects.
