Course summary

This foundation degree programme will suit aspiring students who are looking for a career in, or are already working, with children and young people in a variety of settings. Many of the students who take this programme are working or volunteering in nurseries, schools, special educational needs or care settings. Others will come straight from level 3 study such as A’ levels or Level 3 Diplomas. The course aims to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills required to access a wide variety of roles including supervisory and management roles in a range of early years, school, care or specialist provision. Modules will explore the broad spectrum of provision, curricula and educational approaches. With theoretical knowledge embedded throughout each module, to enable students to apply and link theory to practice with an emphasis on self-reflection and professional development. Students will be offered the ability to gain insight into many of the disciplines associated with supporting children and young people including additional needs and disabilities, legal frameworks, inclusion and rights, current issues and events and creativity in practice. On completion of the FdA Childhood, Education and SEND students will have the opportunity to progress onto to a Level 6 Top-Up.

Modules may include: Higher Education Learning Skills and Reflection , Child & Young People’s Development, Children and Young People’s Rights, Promoting Positive Behaviour, Curriculum in Practice, International Perspectives, Children and Young People’s Health and Well-being, Safeguarding Children and Young People , Research in Higher Education. Please note: these modules are subject to change.

Assessment method

Assessment on the foundation degree will be varied to allow for students to engage with a wide range of possibly assessment methods. This will include reports, essays, exams, presentations, blogs, personal reflections.

Qualified teacher status (QTS)

To work as a teacher at a state school in England or Wales, you will need to achieve qualified teacher status (QTS). This is offered on this course for the following level:
