Being curious and questioning is our starting premise for the MA Education. This course starts with fundamental questions about learning and seeks to examine the complexity of a basic human right; the right to an education. The course challenges you to reflect and review values and philosophies of education and learning drawing upon your own practice. Criticality and self-reflection as key learning attributes. This course is for those interested and passionate about education and learning and who are committed to adopting a questioning approach. You may be in a professional role working in school or educational setting or whose work involves a substantial component of the design and delivery of training within their organisation. You may be at the beginning of your career, looking forward, or in a more established leadership role. You may be a volunteer working in an education setting, or in a support role. Our community of learners come from a wide range of local, national and international settings. This broad range of learners bring a richness to our discussion drawing upon diversity of experiences. The MA provides a stepping stone to both professional leadership responsibilities and to doctoral study, such as our EdD or PhD programmes.
The following themes run through the whole course: Education research, theory and professional knowledge; Education policy and its implications for practice; Reflective practice and professional development; Enquiry and evidence-based practice; Creativity and innovation in education; Leadership, advocacy and action research; Values, nature and purpose of education; Contemporary international perspectives and cultural diversity; Sustainability, inclusion and globalisation.
Your learning is assessed by written papers, portfolios and reflective learning journals, depending on the modules studied, and the final dissertation. These are submitted and marked online. Each 20 credit module assignment is 4,000 words or equivalent. The dissertation is 15-18,000 words.
Evidence of successful completion of study at Higher Education Level 6 (equivalent to Year 3 of an undergraduate degree programme). Students must have current or recent experience of working in education settings and will normally have access to such a setting for practitioner research, particularly for the dissertation.
