Course summary

The Health Care Foundation Year (Year One) introduces you to essential healthcare concepts and prepares you with the foundational skills needed for progression onto the full degree course (Years Two to Four). The full course trains you to provide care for people experiencing mental health problems in various settings, including the community, specialist hospitals, and health centres. Mental health nursing is a demanding yet rewarding profession that empowers you to help individuals gain greater control over their mental health. This programme will equip you with the skills and knowledge to work in diverse health and social care settings, promoting mental health and well-being. You will learn how to support individuals during acute phases of distress, work with those struggling with substance misuse or offending behaviour, and assist those with ongoing mental health conditions. 50% of your studies will be conducted in clinical settings, including hospitals and community environments within the NHS and independent sectors, such as prison placements. These placements offer a supportive environment where you will work alongside experienced practice assessors and supervisors, gaining practical experience and developing your professional skills. In your third year, you may have the opportunity to undertake an international placement, providing you with the chance to experience mental health care outside the UK. At the University, you will be welcomed into a relaxed and friendly learning environment, with access to a range of facilities including formal teaching, group and one-to-one sessions, and a comfortable and enriching learning space. Upon successful completion of the programme, you will earn a degree that qualifies you for registration as a nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
