Course summary

This accredited course is designed to prepare you personally and professionally for a successful career as a chartered physiotherapist. You will develop a wide range of practical and academic skills in contemporary physiotherapy with multiple opportunities to develop your clinical skills through work-based learning – a total of 1,120 hours completed over the course of five clinical placements – in which you will participate in physiotherapy practice under the supervision of fully qualified, experienced physiotherapists.  Our new multimillion Alison Gingell Building provides state-of-the-art facilities for teaching and research, featuring hospital simulation, rehabilitation, clinical skills training, sport and exercise environments. These facilities as well as a strong involvement of service users in the delivery of the physiotherapy content provide opportunities within the University to apply theory and put learning into a clinical context. You’ll be taught by a team of enthusiastic, research-active staff who place great emphasis on your individual development, equipping you with the theoretical, practical, analytical, interpersonal and research skills required for effective clinical reasoning. You will have the opportunity to develop the confidence to make informed, competent treatment decisions, initially during placement and subsequently as you move forward into your physiotherapy career. Modules

Your main study themes are: Foundation Knowledge Anatomical knowledge and an understanding of physiological systems are essential for supporting the effective clinical practice of a physiotherapist. Upon successful completion of this course you will gain a deep knowledge of the human anatomy, focusing on the gross anatomy of the spine, upper and lower limbs. You will develop a sound knowledge and understanding of relevant pathophysiology so that you are better able to devise appropriate treatments for the conditions encountered in clinical practice. Physiotherapy Assessment and Practice From the onset you will be introduced to the underpinning principles of physiotherapy assessment and practice. These fundamental skills serve as a basis for clinical decision making and client focused goal setting in a diverse health and social care context. Assessment practices that reflect current clinical focus, such as health and wellbeing and physical activity promotion, health and safety requirements and client engagement within a bio-psycho-social context. As the course progresses you will advance your skills of assessment, clinical reasoning and intervention, not only considering the service user, but the service as a whole. Evidence Informed Practice and Research To meet the demands of an ever changing global healthcare landscape, all health professionals need to be able to quickly and effectively ‘grab and grapple’ with a different array of evidence sources, to make safe decisions for their patients and service users. To enable this, you will be provided with opportunities throughout the course to develop an in-depth understanding of evidence based practice and research. One of your first modules on the course will introduce you to the concept of evidence informed practice and research and study skills to support your studies at University level. The aim of this course is to develop your research skills during your time at University from being a consumer of evidence to carrying out your own independent research project in your final year. Inter Professional Education As a healthcare professional you will be part of an inter-professional team within which you will be required to work across professional and organisational boundaries to genuinely put the patient at the heart of their health and care. Inter-professional education is therefore a central component of all health and social care courses within the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. You will experience authentic inter-professional learning opportunities throughout this programme of study and in so doing will develop a set of values and capabilities that are essential to becoming a collaborative practice ready professional with an understanding of “integrated working and learning”. You will record these learning experiences in an e-portfolio throughout the course, which provides a foundation for a professional lifelong learning commitment, fulfilling the requirements of the Health and Care Professions Council and enhances employability upon graduation.
