The BA (Hons) Musical Theatre Course, validated by The University of West London, at Momentum Performing Arts Academy is an intensive training programme that builds the students' skills through technical classes, workshops and internal and external performances over their 3 years of study. This course is headed by Kevin Fountain LRAM ARAM ALCM. Performance students receive Private Tuition in singing, acting and voice from their first year, achieving accomplished solo performance standard by graduation in their third year. Vocal training and vocal health for both singing and acting are fundamental from the beginning of the course. All key voice staff have worked with the Estill Voice Training System – THE leading model in training and muscular understanding for the voice. Ensemble and Harmony work takes a strong focus, with History of Musical Theatre, Repertoire and Sight Reading all ensuring the students build a strong and confident singing foundation. Group Acting, Improvisation, Voice Class and Acting Through Song classes help strengthen students' confidence with the spoken word through scenes, monologues and plays. Dance training includes Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Musical Theatre, Commercial, Choreography and Contemporary with Industry Workshops taken by leading West End performers. Gymnastics and Body Conditioning help to build physical strength ensuring the students maintain prime physical fitness. The students' progress is followed in all lessons through our internal assessment systems allowing for regular feedback to each student in individual tutorials. Students are assessed both on a continual basis and a termly assessment within every discipline. There are 3 public performances throughout the year involving all students from all years. These include a Cabaret Performance, A Dance Based Show and a Full-scale Musical with Orchestra. Additionally an Agent Showcase is included for third year students. External projects involve working alongside industry professionals in all areas – from Directors and Musical Directors to Choreographers and Costume/Set designers. These projects are performed both in-house at the Academy as well as at professional theatre spaces including Sadlers Wells, The Shaw Theatre, and Home House. Masterclasses and talks from industry professionals take place throughout the year and intensify in the students’ final year. COURSE BREAKDOWN YEAR ONE Students embrace all aspects of singing, acting and dance The course is full and varied enabling them to discover new skills whilst building on their established talents. The focus of this year is to establish a sound technical basis which will take them through the next two years of training. YEAR TWO The students move into the second year following their own specific programme of options taken with staff consultation at the end of Year 1. There is more focus in putting into practice the skills learnt in Year 1. New classes for Year 2 include Acting Through Song, Individual Repertoire and Personal Development Sessions. DDI Teacher Training and other technique examinations will take place at the end of this year. YEAR THREE The 3rd Year is about performance, preparation for the industry and building stamina. Masterclasses and competitions take place to fine-tune developed skills, whilst industry professionals come in to pass on knowledge and experience.
