Course summary

Overview Renewable energy has experienced significant global growth over the past decade. This, coupled with the transition to a low-carbon economy, technological advancements and policy and regulatory changes means there is demand for skilled professionals who can understand, implement and manage the transition to renewable energy sources. Delivered in person and online by leaders in energy transition at the International Centre for Islands Technology (ICIT), Heriot-Watt University’s Orkney campus. Located within the Orkney Research and Innovation Campus in Stromness, this facility is also where the pan-Island Islands Centre for Net Zero (ICNZ) is based. ICNZ is led by the Orkney-based European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) working closely alongside our leading academics and a range of other local partners. Collectively, current ground-breaking research is helping to address the demographic challenges the islands face and making progress in the development and delivery of new renewable and smart energy systems. It aims to give its graduates cross-cutting skills in renewable energy and the processes of creating just transition. The course addresses the needs of multiple circular economy sectors such as renewable energy developers, communities and organisations under pressure to meet net zero targets and address climate change. Teaching is reinforced with project work where emphasis is placed on simulating real-life situations and processes through, for example, the use of digital tools for data analysis, modelling and other interactive approaches. By choosing to study at our Orkney Campus, you will benefit from a number of activities including guest lectures from leaders in the sector and hands-on practical sessions which help to develop your skills and knowledge in your field of study. Orkney as a destination also offers the opportunity to network with leading ingenuity-led industry employers involved in many renewable energy sectors, providing a range of employment possibilities post-graduation.
