Course summary

Combining History with French, German or Spanish will provide you with a truly unique understanding of the history and cultures of European and North American countries from the Middle Ages to the present. By the time you graduate, you will be able to communicate fluently and competently with speakers of your chosen language. The study of a modern language can be the key to the global workplace. The name of your degree will reflect your chosen language (e.g. BA (Honours) History and French). Key features of the course

  • Gives you an understanding of what it means to be a historian, understanding history as a systematic and reflective discipline.
  • Develops you into a proficient user of your chosen language, reaching level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

  • Improves your competence in intercultural communication.

Modules

This degree has three stages, each comprising 120 credits. In Stage 1, you’ll study a 60-credit introductory history module. You’ll choose your language and study two 30-credit language modules. Next, in Stage 2, you’ll study 60-credit modules in history and in your chosen language. Finally, in Stage 3, you’ll study a 60-credit history module from a choice of two options and a further 60-credit module in your chosen language.
