This programme prepares you for a career in sport and leisure industries. Sport and leisure provision is becoming one of the key global industry sectors and is prominent in most countries both at community levels through to elite and professional sport.
Year 1 provides an introduction to key issues and development of vital skills for sport and leisure industries, complemented by the study of core business disciplines in leadership and marketing. Students will work with an external organisation to see theory in action. Year 2 of the programme has at its core an assessed internship ensuring that all students have the opportunity to develop skills and experience within an industry specific environment. Modules are concerned with developing managerial and leadership skills for sports specific environments and facilities. The programme allows the sports management student a choice of options based on their career pathway. Year 3 develops the themes of contemporary issues and theories within the sports industry including strategy, leadership and management, with the opportunity to choose options. Students will have the opportunity to develop managerial skills through project based learning and also study either a dissertation in a sports management topic or an organisational consultancy project in which they will simulate the management consultant’s role developing advice for an organisation.
The assessment strategy will aim to support the balanced development of key industry competencies and knowledge. Assessments will also aim to support the development in managing ICT, communication, numeracy, problem solving, interacting in teams, critical appraisal, self-management and leadership. Strategies will include a balance of assignments, fieldwork studies, practical assessments and where appropriate examinations.
