Course summary

Our HND Electrical and Electronic Engineering course is a two year full-time qualification that will give you a broad understanding of electrical and electronic principles. This course is perfect if are looking to continue your education at a higher level, with the aim of employment afterwards. The first year is delivered alongside the Mechanical and Manufacturing course, where our expert tutors will provide you with strong, sector-related content and an emphasis on practical skills to help you expand your existing knowledge of engineering. You will focus on mathematics, modern design, and electrical techniques, as well as mechanical principles to give you a broad understanding of all industrial needs. Specialisms will take place in the second year where you will have the opportunity to hone your skills in electrical disciplines. By the end of the course you will have developed a good mix of practical and employability skills to further your career or progress onto a top-up degree. What previous qualifications or experience do I need? Minimum of 48 UCAS points (120 old system) from a BTEC Level 3 Diploma or Extended Diploma / A Levels / Foundation Diploma / Access Diploma in a related subject; proof of qualifications; a satisfactory reference. What can I do after completing this course? Once you have completed the course you will have a diverse range of transferable skills that will enable you to either, advance in your current role, or push for a promotion in this exciting industry. You may also choose to top-up your qualification to full honours on our BSc (Hons) Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering course. Past students have gone on to work with local businesses such as Qinetiqs, where graduates secure technician, supervisor and management roles. Past students have worked with companies such as EDF, Aero Vintage, Photek, Deutsch(TE), Secol Engineering, VG Scienta, Stevens Rowsell, British Gypsum and Interface Engineering. In 2024 we were awarded an exceptional 94% National Student Survey (NSS) rating. Every university in the UK takes part in the NSS, as do many colleges. This survey gathers students’ opinions on the quality of their courses which helps to inform prospective students’ choices and provide data that supports universities and colleges to improve the student experience. Modules

You will be able work in your own dedicated space in our new University Centre, with access to the latest PC and Mac computer software. Visiting guest lecturers and industry experts will provide you with a thought-provoking insight into real-life engineering examples. You will have the advantage of being part of smaller class sizes giving you increased contact time with your tutors, providing you with real value for money. You will gain a range of transferable skills that will provide you with intellectual flexibility and dynamism to take into the next stage of your career, or into further study. Our tutors have fantastic links with local employers meaning you can tap into these local businesses to try and secure potential work placements or even a job. This course has been designed with career progression in mind and can be the perfect springboard into a career in engineering. Building on the skills and techniques you have gained from previous study and your experience, you will be introduced to advanced areas of engineering such as, Instrumentation and Control, health and safety and engineering management to give you an understanding of the roles you can play in engineering world. This course will give you a broad mix of units, so you are able to experience a wide range of engineering challenges to learn from. Units include:

Qualification requirements

This course allows you to "top up" from an HNC to and HND on a part-time basis. We can also accept 120 CATS points from degree-level study (e.g. one year of full-time FdSc or BSc). Content of completed modules from previous study will be reviewed to ensure they map across to learning aims/outcomes of the new course. Please contact us for further information.
