Applicants interested in this course will apply to study a Foundation Degree for the first two years of the course. You may choose to study: Garden Design FD. Unique in the north of England and approved by the Society of Gardeners, this Garden Design Degree is ideal for those who want to become a professional Garden Designer. Indeed, most of our students go on to set up their own business. The Garden Design BA (Hons) will equip you with the ability to use sophisticated software such as VectorWorks, SketchUp Pro and Adobe Photoshop CC to develop your professional status as well as furthering your knowledge in planting, sustainability and urban public spaces. Your expert tutors are Gold Award winners at the RHS Chatsworth Flower Show 2018 and, in conjunction with students, the Harrogate Flower Show with Secret Garden 2014, The Equilibrium Garden 2009 and Student Garden in 2008. You will participate in lectures, demonstrations, practical and creative drawing sessions, site visits and design several ‘real’ gardens. You will develop the skills needed to work with a range of different clients and to liaise with those in the horticultural and construction industries. There is the opportunity to be involved in portfolio-based projects and practically based exercises that build on lecture and seminar study such as peer group discussion and modelling exercises. In addition to timetabled sessions, 8-10 hours of personal study will be required each week. You will be expected to become resourceful and entrepreneurial and to take responsibility for your own learning. Independent research, reporting on own reading, one to one guidance and small group discussion will be available to help you progress. Your independent study is supported by the excellent Learning Hub at the Aireville Campus in addition to the College’s Specialist Support Centre.
