This innovative and inspiring programme offers a suite of four specialist pathways, taught by internationally-respected tutors, that will enhance your ministry and vocation and equip you to work in and for the church with a variety of ages and contexts. Our flexible and practice-based mode of study offers you the opportunity to take a Certificate in Higher Education over one or two years, and then go on to complete a Diploma and Degree. There is no need to leave home or the ministry you are involved in, as teaching is delivered online and in intensive teaching weeks. There is, however, lots of scope for discovering new things about what you do and why, and developing theological and spiritual confidence in God’s calling on your mission and ministry. Children Mission and Ministry This specialist pathway is for those working mainly with children up to secondary school age, in or for the church on a paid or voluntary basis. It covers: how children grow and learn and the issues they face in that process; theological understanding and principles related to children and childhood; the spirituality and faith of children; an introduction to mission to and with children; and management of self, team and leadership skills. Youth Mission and Ministry This specialist pathway is for those working with young people as they head in to and out of adolescence and young adulthood. It covers: the issues young people face both physically and culturally; theological approaches to young people and what their spirituality and faith might look like; an introduction to mission to and with young people; and management of self, team and leadership skills. Third Age Mission and Ministry This specialist pathway is for those working with, or wanting to develop a ministry among, older people. It covers: the issues of retirement, ageing and dementia, and the theological and biblical principles related to these; the nature of spirituality and faith in older people; and relevant and effective approaches to mission. It also includes management of self, team and leadership skills. Family Mission and Ministry This specialist pathway is specially designed for those working in mission and ministry amongst families. It considers what constitutes ‘family’, how families are formed, and the issues they face; the theological and biblical principles of family; an introduction to mission to and with families; spirituality and faith formation within families. It also includes management of self, team and leadership skills. Progression Moving on from the Certificate, the Diploma brings students of all the specialist pathways together to gain a better understanding of wider issues in mission and ministry; specialist delivery, learning and assessment remains a key part of the student experience. Students are supported by a personal tutor and encouraged to reflect more deeply on their ongoing practice in mission and ministry. In the final stage (degree) students explore their specialist ministry in more theological and missiological depth.
Level 4 units (first year): Study Skills, Introduction to Practical Theology and [specialism*], Introduction to Mission [specialism*], Issues Facing [specialism*], Spirituality and Faith, Applied Practice, Leadership, Team and Self. *Specialism represents the student's chosen pathway, i.e. Children, Youth, Third Age or Family. Level 5 units, including optional units (second year) Biblical Theology and Context, Discipleship and Discipling, Contemporary Culture, Mission Frameworks and Perspectives, Developing Mission and Ministry in Context, A Contextual Reading of Luke (takes place in the Holy Land at and additional cost), Personal and Professional Management of Self and Work, Performance and Presentation (Intermediate). Level 6 units, including optional units (third year) Problem Based Learning Unit 1 – Theological Perspectives, Problem Based Learning Unit 2 – Missiological Perspectives, Research Methods, Dissertation, Cultural Perspectives on Christian Mission, Personal and Professional Development: Ministry Formation (Advanced).
There are no examinations, all assessment is done via coursework. On average students are required to write 4000-6000 words per 20 credits. At level 4 this is 2-3 pieces of work per 20 credit unit, at level six 1-2. Assessments are designed to relate to practical aspects of the ministerial specialism and reflection on it. Full-time students are normally given two weeks to complete assessments; part-time students are normally given at least one month. Students are encouraged to engage with their personal tutor for formative assessment purposes and are able to submit up to 500 words per assessment for feedback.
Qualified teacher status (QTS)
To work as a teacher at a state school in England or Wales, you will need to achieve qualified teacher status (QTS). This is offered on this course for the following level:
