Course summary

"Establish a career with any of the world's most affluential institutions, government regulators, or in academia. MSc Finance and Econometrics at Southampton is one of the only masters in the UK to offer specialist training in advanced econometrics techniques and their application to Finance. We’re also ranked Top 20 in the UK for Economics and Econometrics (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2022). The full-time programme lasts 12 months, with nine months of taught modules between October and June of the academic year, followed by three summer months of supervised research for a Masters’ dissertation. Part-time programme lasts 27 months and consists of the same components as the full-time version. Students consult with the Head of Masters to establish a detailed plan of studies to fulfil the programme requirements. We can offer you mostly small-group teaching and a considerable amount of personal support from our staff. MSc students are strongly encouraged to attend our seminars and research workshops. Our MSc students usually form a lively and cohesive group which plays an active role in the Division's academic and social life."

Assessment method

Modules are assessed by one or a combination of the following methods: exams, coursework, projects, or essays and dissertation. Exams are held at the end of each semester.


How to apply

International applicants

If English is not your first language, you will need to demonstrate your English is at our Band C level - IELTS 6.5 overall, with minimum 6.0 in reading, writing, listening and speaking. For information on other accepted English language tests, please see the website.

Entry requirements

First- or upper second-class degree or an equivalent standard in other qualifications approved by the University in economics or a related subject with a high Maths content. Please see course page online for full entry requirements.
