Course summary

Do you get excited by the idea of being at the forefront of the construction industry: civil engineering, building services engineering, quantity surveying, site engineering, surveying, construction management or architectural technology. If the answer is yes then the Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Modern Methods of Construction is a course for you, it will support your career and help you to take your first steps into professional construction roles. The HNC is designed to equip students with Construction skills, knowledge, and the understanding necessary to achieve high performance in the global construction sector. The course provides students with an understanding of the way technologies are transforming the industries of Construction and prepares them to work with these technologies. You will develop contemporary vocational skills including study, research, analysis, planning and organisational skills. You will also learn to take responsibility for your own learning and the ability to be flexible and to work co-operatively with others. Completion of the HNC will enable you to achieve appropriate professional body recognition in particular, but not exclusively, from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and the Chartered Institute of Building. It will support progression to a HND or into employment within the sector. Through studying the HNC in Modern Methods of Construction you will gain practical experience with industry standard software and technologies such as N4ce and Autodesk’s AutoCAD & REVIT software along with Trimble, Spectra and Leica surveying equipment; You will also be taught by staff with extensive industry experience. Achievement of the HNC prepares you for further progression within the construction industry higher education qualifications, as well as the option to enter the industry to start your working career in construction. Graduates often enter roles such as site engineers, construction managers, assistant site managers, assistant project managers, design managers and CAD/BIM technicians to name a few.

Assessment method

The HNC is taught using a mixture of lectures, seminars and practical workshops.

Qualified teacher status (QTS)

To work as a teacher at a state school in England or Wales, you will need to achieve qualified teacher status (QTS). This is offered on this course for the following level:
