Course summary

In this course, you will be prompted to delve into cultural and critical perspectives on contemporary photography while experimenting with analogue and digital image-making techniques. Based at one of the top-rated teaching institutions in the UK (NSS 2023), this is a bespoke course that nurtures your interests and ambitions as an artist. Our MA Photography team will support you to challenge yourself - helping you enhance your skills and build a strong foundation for the next stage of your career. You will access HCA's specialised darkrooms and state-of-the-art digital studios, benefiting from our interdisciplinary environment. Additionally, you'll gain valuable first-hand insights from visiting photographers and artists - recent examples include Mark Neville, Katrina Stamatopoulos & Martin Parr. You will be challenged to broaden the scope of your work and experiment with innovative approaches. Anchored in the awareness of photography's ever-evolving nature, you will explore the essence of photography’s modern practice, developing adaptability & innovation. Integrating conceptualisation, research & practical application, the course will encourage you to grow as a visual artist broadening your influences and refining your perspective. HOW YOU WILL LEARN: Through tutorials, our faculty will guide you to develop a sophisticated approach to shaping and communicating your ideas. We will help you develop the skills to ensure they land with impact and engage with new audiences in the world around them – and give you the confidence to exhibit & publish work that is uniquely yours. Flexibility - Our MA offers a dynamic blend of online, on-campus, and on-location learning, providing flexibility to tailor your studies. Whether you prefer the convenience of online learning, the interactive experience of on-campus classes, or the hands-on exploration of on-location work, exploring our campus workshops, our program has something to offer you. With the freedom to tailor your studies, you'll be able to advance towards your professional goals. Collaboration - Additionally, you can participate in activities alongside peers enrolled in other MA art programs, fostering collaboration & interdisciplinary learning opportunities. Community and collaboration form the foundation of our philosophy. We all require a supportive peer network to maintain motivation, find inspiration, and enhance productivity. From day one at HCA, you'll receive guidance to cultivate a professional network that will benefit you throughout your professional journey. In this course, you will: Utilise our state-of-the-art digital studio facilities, equipped with the latest photography and video production software and hardware, available on both Mac and PC platforms. Take advantage of various platforms to exhibit your work professionally, such as the final MA exhibition & other graduate showcases. Access the technical resources and facilities, including our printmaking studio, 3D workshop, audio-visual store, photography darkrooms, editing suites, and more. All of our technical demonstrators are active designers, makers or performers in their own right;- sharing their passion for their disciplines with our students and passing on their knowledge and expertise. Receive instruction from academic practitioners renowned in their respective fields, who have showcased their work through national and international publications and exhibitions, actively engaging in practice-oriented research. Enhance your understanding of photography across disciplines. Cultivate a distinctive, contemporary photographic perspective. Modules

Course Structure: The modules are structured to facilitate your exploration of the extensive scope of the medium: Equipping you with a robust foundation to tackle demanding and ambitious projects or external briefs with confidence. Research & Exploratory Practice (60 credits) The initial part of the programme is about engaging in a phase of research and development, immersing yourself in an independent, critically informed approach. You will lay the foundation for a self-driven creative exploration, where your contributions through your projects and thoughts are pivotal to the learning process. Master's Project Confirmation (60 credits) Throughout this module, you'll build upon your previous research, starting experimentation to advance a photographic project that enriches the visual discourse with the previously developed theoretical framework—understanding your project as research driven by practice. Master's Project Realisation (60 credits) This concluding module within the MA curriculum is the culmination of your postgraduate studies, offering a platform to articulate the fundamental techniques, research methodologies, concepts, and skills acquired throughout the program. Your self-determined research trajectory and ongoing photographic practice primarily guide this module.

We are unable to accept applications from international students (including EU/EEA) for this course.

Entry requirements

• Applicants should have an advanced understanding of their particular discipline and be able to demonstrate their ability to sustain research at MA level • Applicants should be (or about to become) graduates. Preference will be given to good honours graduates although exceptional applicants from a non-academic background will also be considered • Applicants should submit a short proposal of up to five hundred words, detailing a proposed programme of study, supported by an electronic portfolio of current practice, which will form the basis of discussion within the interview • Applicants whose first language is not English must achieve IELTS level 7.0 (reading & writing) or equivalent prior to enrolment. Please note, that we are not able to accept applications from international (including EU/EEA) students. • Typical applicants would be Photography graduates. However, graduates from other disciplines within art, design and media will be considered • Professional photographers who wish to reposition their practice may also qualify
