Mathematics and Statistics at Queen Mary University of London - UCAS

Course summary

Statistics is essential to making advances in science, technology, business and public policy, and a fascinating field of study in itself. This BSc combines rigorous all-round mathematical training with in-depth study of statistics. If you want to take your study of statistics deeper and develop mathematical research skills, consider our four-year Mathematics with Statistics MSci. You’ll spend your first year building a foundation across pure, discrete, decision and modern applied mathematics, probability and statistics. From the second year you’ll specialise in statistics, building statistical theory and methodology on mathematical foundations, especially probability theory. Probabilistic modelling has applications in genetics, quantum physics and risk analysis, and is increasingly used in the financial sector. You can study design of experiments, financial time series and actuarial mathematics. A choice of modules in your second and third years allows you to focus on the aspects of statistics that most interest you, or broaden your studies to encompass other areas of mathematics. You can also align your studies to your career goals, choosing modules on programming, insurance, computational statistics or teaching.

Modules

YEAR 1 Introduction to Algebra Introduction to Analysis with Calculus Numbers, Sets and Functions Probability and Statistics Programming in Python I Vectors and Matrices Please note that all modules are subject to change.

Assessment method

Most of your modules will be assessed by an examination worth at least 90 per cent of the year’s study, with the remainder covered by coursework and tests. Some BSc students will also complete a final-year project
