Course summary

This course is specifically aimed at International students, supporting those wishing to gain practical work based experiential learning. Together with studying your chosen course we are offering an additional 6-month placement opportunity, making the course 18 months in length. This allows students to put into practice the skills and techniques developed throughout the Master’s degree within a UK environment after completing the 12-month taught programme. This course enhances your career development within the 'people profession' and has been approved by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), the UK’s HRM accrediting body, to prepare you for the Advanced level standards of the CIPD new profession map and to provide you with the knowledge and skills needed to pursue Chartered Membership of CIPD. Valued by employers, CIPD qualifications help you to develop the business understanding and technical knowledge that employers look for. It is relevant to HR practitioners in the public, private, not-for-profit sectors, and international HRM. This course offers blend of practical personal development and critical analysis of emerging HR trends and issues that organisations face. There is a focus on strategic thinking and understanding business challenges to prepare you for your future career in people management and organisational engagement. You will graduate with an enhanced personal professional profile and greater awareness of how HRM practices can add value to corporate strategy and enhance better work and working lives. In addition, you will be able to access the University of Huddersfield’s Capstone project, providing you with the opportunity to pursue a chosen topic of interest in learning and development to greater depth through research, consultancy or venture launch options. On this course you will develop knowledge and practical skills across a broad range of topics leading to Associate Membership of the CIPD. After graduating, with relevant work experience you can apply to upgrade your membership to Chartered Member or Chartered Fellow. Professional links and accreditation: Students who successfully complete this course will be eligible to apply for Associate membership of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD). Associate is the first level of CIPD professional membership and entitles you to use the designation ‘Assoc. CIPD’ after your name. This course has been validated in line with the new CIPD profession map and the level 7 Advanced Diploma in Strategic Learning & Development. We are a long-established CIPD Approved Centre and links with the West Yorkshire CIPD branch offer continual professional development events, additional networking, advice, mentoring and updates from the profession. The University offers additional guest presenters, speakers and lectures that students are welcome to attend.

You have a choice of three routes; Research Route, Consultancy Route and New Venture Creation Route (subject to tutor approval). Research Route Research Methods Individual Research Project Consultancy Route Consultancy Skills Group Consultancy Project Venture Creation Route New Venture Creation Launch a venture MSc Professional Practice Placement The Professional Practice module gives you an opportunity to reflect on your personal and professional development and put theory into practice through professional work experience. This route must be chosen at the point of application by selecting the specific (Professional Practice) route as the placement adds a further 6 months to your duration of study. Due to the competitive nature of the placement route the Professional Practice course has limited availability and places are capped.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements for this course are normally: * An Honours degree (2:1 or above) or equivalent qualification. All applicants will be invited to interview as part of the application process.


English language requirements

If your first language is not English, you will need to meet the minimum requirements of an English Language qualification. The minimum for IELTS is 7.0 overall with no element lower than 6.5 (a minimum of TOEFL 550 (Computer Based Toefl 213) score) or equivalent.
