This programme of study will give you an overview and in depth look at Mechanical Engineering. The HNC programme comprises of 8 units of which 4 are compulsory and on 1 is a specialist Mechanical Engineering unit. The remaining 3 Mechanical units are all about an in depth look at the mechanical principles, thermodynamics and fluid dynamics. As with all engineering, you will need to study higher level mathematics as well as Engineering Science along with Engineering Design and Management of Projects. What you learn in these units is then applied to your remaining units. This course is appropriate both for those wishing to continue their education through applied learning, as well as offering career progression and professional development for those already in employment. The course is taught by well qualified and industry experienced lectures who are dedicated to ensuring student success through effective curriculum delivery and high-quality pastoral support. The team includes staff with relevant industrial and Mechanical Engineering expertise. This course is offered on a full-time or part-time basis. The part-time course is taught over one day per week and takes approximately 18 months to complete. The full-time course is taught over two days per week and takes one year to complete. Work Experience and Placement There is no requirement for work experience or a work placement within an Engineering company. After the Course If you successfully achieve your programme of study, you will be awarded a Pearson Higher National Certificate (Level 4) in Mechanical Engineering, after which there are a number of options open to you. Firstly, you could progress to the next level of academic study eg if you have completed and achieved an HNC then you can apply to go on and study for a HND. If you have successfully completed an HND then you could apply to complete a full BEng Honours degree. Your second option would be to seek employment with an engineering company. If you wish to study for an HND in Mechanical Engineering, you will need to successfully complete an HNC first as your HND unit build on the knowledge gained in your HNC. You need to complete 7 units at level 5 to be awarded an HND, plus, your successful achievement of your HNC at level 4.
Modules
A typical week could have between approximately 10-20 hours of contact time in taught sessions, plus additional 1-1 support available by student request. It is possible that contact hours will vary between terms owing to the combination and intensity of modules studied. As with all HE programmes, students are required to take ownership of their learning and development and should expect to spend time studying and completing assessment tasks with independence outside of lectures. You will study a range of units that will develop your specialist knowledge and skills. These include: 1. Engineering Design 2. Engineering Mathematics 3. Engineering Science 4. Managing a Professional Engineering Project 5. Mechanical Principles 6. Fundamentals of Thermodynamics and Heat Engines 7. Fluid Mechanics 8. Materials, Properties & Testing Please be aware that modules studied may change periodically to reflect developments in the discipline. Students can always find the most up-to-date information about your modules and who is teaching them in the course handbook. There are no timetabled Tutorial sessions in the programme. However, staff are always available to support your learning and answer any questions you might have. This can be done at the end of a class or during the week.
Assessment method
You will be assessed using a range of methods including essays, presentations, assignments and practical assessments. Feedback will be provided to you in writing, along with information reflecting your performance and recommendations for improvement.

Typical entry requirements are 48 UCAS Tariff Points. These could come from a BTEC Level 3 qualification in Engineering or another related area, an A Level profile that demonstrates strong performance in a relevant subject area, or adequate performance in more than one subject, or other Level 3 qualifications such as an Access Course or International Baccalaureate. Applicants are also expected to hold Grade 4 / C in Maths and English at GCSE level (or equivalent). A GCSE in Physics (or any Physics-based Science) at Grade 4 / C or higher is highly desirable. This programme of study does not require any previous experience in Mechanical Engineering. We welcome applicants from mature students, and do not necessarily require the same entry requirements for those who will be aged 21+ at the start of the course as we would expect from school-leavers. If you are over 21 years of age and have suitable industrial experience you may be permitted entry to the programme post successful completion of an interview and evidence of suitable and appropriate experience. English language requirements
International applicants will be required to evidence English language skills - this could be an IELTS score of 5.5 (with both reading and writing at at least 5.5), a grade 4 in GCSE English (or equivalent), or having recently completed a Level 3 qualification taught and assessed in the English language.
