Course summary

Communication defines us as human beings. This degree gives you a chance to think critically about media and communication in your own society, globally and in a Portuguese-specific context. International media and communications Drawing on a range of approaches (such as sociology, communication theory, politics and cultural studies), you’ll explore areas such as:

  • content
  • impact
  • economics
  • history
  • politics
  • ethics
  • sustainability
With the focus being on media theory and cultural history you'll develop critical skills in:
  • media analysis
  • cultural awareness
  • industry engagement
Portuguese No previous knowledge of Portuguese is required. You'll build your language skills to near-native competence by the end of the course. You will also study culture, history and politics to get a full appreciation of the Portuguese-speaking world - including Portugal, Brazil and Portuguese-speaking Africa. Your third year will be spent abroad in a Portuguese-speaking country. This exciting experience develops your communication skills and really helps you stand out to future employers.

Modules

You will divide your studies equally between Portuguese and media and communications. In year one, in Portuguese, you will receive a firm grounding in the structures of the language through the core language module and introductory modules in a wide range of topics. In international media and communications studies you will be introduced to cultural and communications theories, mass media and new media. In year two your language studies will be consolidated and developed to prepare you for the year abroad. You will study a choice of modules aimed at developing your knowledge. In international media and communications studies you will explore issues around public relations, political communication and global media and news production. You will also receive specific research training in the area of culture, film and media in order to lay the foundation for your final year dissertation. Your third academic year abroad will be spent in Portugal or Brazil studying at a university, working as a language teaching assistant or doing a work placement. Study placements in Europe will be arranged through the Turing Scheme and build on our long-standing connections with partner institutions. Year four will be spent back in Nottingham. You will consolidate your competence in the Portuguese language obtained during your year abroad, as well as deepening your understanding of Lusophone culture and history. Modules in international media and communications studies will allow you to explore the political issues arising from, among other things, cultural policy and media coverage of conflict. You will also undertake a dissertation project under the close supervision of a member of staff with knowledge of your chosen area. Placement and volunteering opportunities are available in the School of Cultures, Languages and Area Studies, as well as via the Nottingham Advantage Award.

European Baccalaureate - 75% overall. Beginners Portuguese or those who have studied GCSE Portuguese. There is no post A Level pathway.
