Are you interested in the power of words? Do you like analysing the way language is used in the media and in all kinds of different texts? Do you want to learn more about creating your own texts and media? English and Media is a vocational degree that gives you the opportunity to combine the study of English literature and creative writing with the theory and practice of multi-media production. We'll show you how great writers, from Shakespeare to Toni Morrison, have used words to express themselves and to influence the world around them. At the same time, you'll study how words, images and technology are combined to such powerful effect in digital media. You'll develop practical skills in media production, using the latest media formatting equipment and software. You can specialise in a particular area of production, whether that's radio and podcasts, digital effects or transmedia. You'll also have the opportunity to create your own literature and learn how to give and receive criticism in creative writing workshops. Putting your creative and practical skills into practice, you'll complete two professional work placements. You'll gain invaluable professional experience and make contacts that could help you build your future career. Whether you want to work in the media, train to be a teacher, or work in a field where good communication skills are needed, English and Media has a lot to offer you. Placement opportunities We are one of only a few UK universities to build professional work placements into every degree. You'll complete two professional work placements, which will give you the chance to graduate with up to three months' professional work experience without having to take a sandwich year out. Our students have completed their placements at a wide range of organisations – from film production companies and recording studios, to local newspapers and MPs' offices. If you're interested in teaching, you could also experience working in a primary or secondary school. Graduate opportunities Our graduates work in marketing and communications, teaching, advertising, publishing, copywriting, and television and radio production.
On this degree you will study a range of modules. In the first year you will be trained in the skills, knowledge, tools, and perspectives required to work productively with texts, images, and various media. This equips and prepares you for the second year in which you tackle modules organised around cultural issues and trends both in a contemporary and a historical context. At this stage we provide training and support for your engagement with existing scholarship, the production of your own analyses, and with the communication of your findings. The final year brings all this together with modules that offer more scope to choose your own topics so you can develop confidence and experience as an independent researcher and producer of knowledge.
