Course summary

This joint honours degree course combines the study of film with Italian. It will suit those with an enquiring mind and a passion for exploring the culture of another country and society. Italian is available from beginners' level and post-A level (or equivalent). Italian language and culture have had a lasting impact on Europe. Today, Italy's innovative contributions to design, technology and fashion make it a major global commercial force. Italy is both traditional and modern and this tension is apparent throughout its history and culture. As the United Kingdom forges a new relationship with its European partners and seeks to develop its trading and cultural ties throughout the world, expertise in modern languages is more important than ever. In the Department of Film and Television, guided by leading scholars and practitioners, you will explore the history, criticism and contexts of film and television. You will consider theoretical perspectives, appreciate how films are made and engage in creative work such as practical filmmaking activities. Alongside film you will study Italian language, history and culture units, choosing from a wide range of options that allow you to pursue your own interests. Both departments offer a vibrant learning environment with research-led teaching. You will spend your third year abroad on a study or work placement in a Italian-speaking country, refining your language skills and cultural understanding. To find out more about studying abroad, visit Global Opportunities: http://www.bristol.ac.uk/global-opportunities/go-abroad/ In your final year you will return to Bristol, where you will have the chance to undertake a range of guided project work, including a placement in the creative industries.
