Course summary

The Master of Research (MRes) is the foundation year of the PhD for students with prior research experience at masters level in a subject relevant for management research. The programme accepts applicants for all the PhD pathways except the Finance and Accounting pathways. Modules

The MRes in Management Studies programme consists of: five taught courses a dissertation based on your research proposal The MRes programme is fully integrated with your PhD. During the MRes year you acquire tailored foundational and methodological training for your doctoral work and are introduced to the frontier of academic knowledge in your chosen discipline. You also develop and expand your research skills by conducting a significant supervised research project/study, which you will summarise in a dissertation that accounts for 50 per cent of the total mark.

Assessment method

Taught modules are assessed by essay, coursework, individual presentation or group presentation. The 16,000 word dissertation mark counts for 50 per cent of the final mark. Continuation to the PhD is subject to performance on the MRes programme. You continue to the PhD if you obtain at least 70 per cent overall (modules and dissertation combined) and at least 70 per cent in your dissertation. The pass mark for obtaining the MRes degree is 60 per cent overall.

Qualified teacher status (QTS)

To work as a teacher at a state school in England or Wales, you will need to achieve qualified teacher status (QTS). This is offered on this course for the following level:

Entry requirements

The minimum standard required is a First Class Honours or equivalent. This equates to a CGPA of 3.7/4.0.Applicants whose 1st language is not English should have IELTS 7.5, with not less than 7.0 in each element; or TOEFL 110, with not less than 25 in each element.
