Biochemistry with Foundation Year at University of Bedfordshire - UCAS

Course summary

Biochemistry is an essential part of modern science as it crosses many disciplines and provides fundamental insights into biological processes. It has revolutionised our understanding of biological systems from microbes to humans and has led to many beneficial biotechnology applications. The BSc Biochemistry will equip you with a strong foundation in modern biochemistry, and specialist knowledge and skills essential for careers in pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, agricultural and related sectors. Our biochemistry graduates also seek wider career opportunities in hospitals, government department, academic organisations and the publishing industry. Foundation year In the Foundation year you will study three days per week. The focus will be on academic writing skills and numeracy, plus subject-specific content to fully prepare you for entry to an Undergraduate degree. The course has been designed to develop your skills and to prepare you for entry onto the first year of your chosen course. It provides a balance between content related to your chosen subject and the range of wider skills required for undergraduate study. This is an integrated four-year degree, with the foundation year as a key part of the course. This course is ideal for those who do not meet our standard entry requirements or those with a non-standard educational background. It will allow you to graduate with a full undergraduate degree in your chosen subject in four years. Why choose this course?

  • Explore core subjects such as biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, and genetics along with specialised areas such as bioinformatics and molecular modelling, drug design and development, biotechnology and genetic engineering.
  • Gain specialist knowledge such as structure-function relationships, signalling and regulatory systems, and metabolic pathways as well as practical skills to work at the forefront of this exciting and developing field
  • Develop transferable skills such as independent thinking, planning and problem solving, observational, analytical and communication skills – all highly sought after by today’s employers
  • Study in our recently refurbished teaching laboratories based at Luton campus and the Butterfield Park technology zone
