Course summary

This courses is designed to provide opportunities for professionals working in education to reflect on their current practices with a view to improving and enhancing that practice for the benefit of those they are teaching or training. You can also undertake the MEd if you are in a support or administrative role in an educational organisation. If you have a PGCE or a Postgraduate Diploma in Education at Masters level you may be able to transfer this credit into the Masters course of your choosing. You will plan your Masters route on an individual basis and the modules chosen will inform the title of the Award you will receive. The Core modules, taken by all students, are: Professional Development which will prepare you for academic study at masters level Research Methods which will enable you to develop the skills and knowledge to carry out primary research Dissertation. The focus of your dissertation will be your individual choice and you will be supported by a supervisor. The generic core encompasses all the learning outcomes for the programme to ensure that you have coverage of the necessary skills and attributes. 40 further Credits are dedicated to the core subject module for the named route and another 40 to Optional Modules. *PLEASE NOTE - THIS PROGRAMME IS UNDERGOING PERIODIC REVIEW/REAPPROVAL IN THE 2019-20 ACADEMIC YEAR FOR DELIVERY FROM 2020-21. Periodic Review is a monitoring and review activity undertaken by all universities/colleges delivering HE programmes. Any changes to the existing programmes as a result of this process will be fully communicated to all applicants as soon as possible after conclusion of the reviews.

Option modules: Current Developments in Primary Education; Independent Study; Independent Study in Speech Language and Communication; Developing Primary Foreign Languages; Mentoring and Coaching; Cognitive Approaches to Learning; Designing and Developing the Curriculum; Effective Teaching and Learning Using Online Social Networks; Evaluating Design and Management of Online Courses; Theories that Underpin Teaching and Learning; Programming Skills for Teachers; Understanding Autism; Understanding Specific Learning Difficulties; Work Based Learning; Speech Language and Communication Needs in Education; Reflection on Issues in Practice; Leadership and Management in Education; Play, Learning and Creativity: Debates in Early Childhood; Inclusive Education; ICT and E-Learning in the Curriculum.

Assessment method

Assessment styles are varied and, depending on the route taken, include written assignments, presentations, reflective logs, portfolios and (for the Master's degree) a dissertation.


Entry requirements

You should normally hold a good Honours degree or an equivalent vocational qualification and be working in an educational or education-related setting. If you have other qualifications and/or experience, you may be considered for entry to the Postgraduate Certificate and Diploma stages, from which you can then transfer to Masters level if you are achieving at an appropriate standard. The tuition fee rate per year is fixed for the duration of the course providing there is no break in study. You will not be asked to pay these fees up front, as you should be eligible for loans to cover the tuition fees and assist with living expenses from Student Finance England. However, please ensure that you have made your application and secured funding for your course prior to registration.
