Course summary

The course is offered in partnership with Argyll and Bute, Comhairle na Eilean Siar, Highland Council and Perth and Kinross Council, each working with the university through their local campus. The PGDE (Secondary) consists of 18 weeks' study at the university plus 18 weeks in professional practice in schools. You must be a fluent Gaelic speaker prior to the start of the course and your language proficiency will be assessed at interview. On this course you will complete the majority of your school practice in a Gaelic medium education (GME) setting, subject to Local Authority availability. The subjects listed below can be studied at the following campuses: UHI Argyll (Oban); UHI Inverness; UHI Outer Hebrides (Stornoway); UHI Perth; Sabhal Mòr Ostaig (Isle of Skye); or UHI West Highland (Fort William): Art and Design* Biology and Science Business Education Chemistry and Science Computing Science English Gaelic History* Home Economics Mathematics Music* Physics and Science Religious Education* Technological Education The course is sometimes available at Lochgilphead (through UHI Argyll) and at Benbecula (through UHI Outer Hebrides). This decision is made annually and is dependent on the number of applicants in those areas. *Not available in Perth

Qualification requirements

Applicants should hold a relevant degree at undergraduate level or above. Preference will be given to those possessing a degree at Honours level, although consideration will also be given to those holding ordinary degrees. Please note: There are subject specific entry guidelines for secondary teaching stipulated by GTC Scotland and detailed in the Frequently Asked Questions document on the University website. This course does not accept applications for deferred entry. Applicants must provide details of their degree, English and Mathematics qualifications within the application, as failure to do so will lead to automatic rejection.

Criminal records declaration (DBS/Disclosure Scotland)

Successful applicants will be required to complete a PVG Disclosure Check and become PVG Scheme Members in order to undertake this course. Applicants who have lived outside the UK for a period of six or more consecutive months in the past 5 years will also be required to provide a criminal record check(s) from all the relevant country(-ies) prior to enrolment on the programme.
