Based within our Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, our research programme in English literature is characterised by a combination of traditional literary scholarship and innovative interdisciplinarity. Staff are engaged in editing scholarly new editions of important but neglected works and also investigate the connections between literature and other disciplines and subject areas, including history, philosophy, science, urban studies and visual cultures. The department has established strengths in the following areas: Gothic studies; Victorian literature and culture; modern and contemporary literature; cultural and critical theory.
