With a BSc Geography with a Year Abroad degree from the University of Chester (accredited by the Royal Geographical Society), you will gain the knowledge and skills to tackle global priority issues, such as the climate crisis, and play an important part in creating a sustainable future for all. You will learn about the physical and human processes that shape our world and understand the most pressing global environment issues of our time. Incorporating a year studying abroad as part of your degree course enables you to acquire the confidence and wider understanding of local-global connectivities sought by graduate employers. Our BSc Geography with a Year Abroad degree is flexible, so you can choose to develop specialisms in distinctive areas of Physical Geography, or to maintain a balance of both Physical and Human Geography content. The breadth of teaching and research interests of Geography academics at Chester means that our Geography courses are research-informed and comprehensive. Subjects covered include Climate and Sea Level Change, Coastal Processes and Management, River Processes and Flooding, Glaciers and Glaciation, Biogeography, Paleoclimatology, Environmental Pollution, Remote Sensing, Sustainable Development, Poverty and Health, Smart Cities, Migration, Geopolitics and more. Our proximity to the coasts, lakes, rivers and mountains of North Wales, as well as to the urban and industrial centres of Manchester and Liverpool, enables us to incorporate fieldwork and field-based research throughout our course, allowing you to explore key processes and issues in Physical and Human Geography first-hand. We offer international fieldwork opportunities in Norway (Glacial Processes, Cold Environments) and Spain (Arid Geomorphology or Urban Change), in addition to your year spent studying at an overseas institution. Our modules are designed to ensure that you develop the knowledge, skills, expertise and confidence to become an agent of change. Wide-ranging and advanced employment-focussed skills are embedded throughout the programme (GIS and Remote Sensing, laboratory analytical methods, environmental monitoring, big data analysis, critical thinking), and we provide an invaluable opportunity for you to build relevant employment and problem-solving experience by working in an external organisation as a part of a full-time five-week work placement. Our graduating students gain professional employment in a wide range of sectors, allowing them to apply their knowledge and skills to drive change on the issues that matter to them.
