Course summary

Aimed at candidates with a strong academic career as evident in publications and a significant body of work outside academia. Candidates must be graduates (or equivalent) of at least five years standing and have already obtained a Masters degree, or show evidence of having received research training or equivalent experience in their working environment. Publications must be in the public domain with a depth of scholarship and originality. For information on fees for this course please see our online prospectus information.

Assessment method

The assessors will look for evidence of an ability to articulate a research project, a coherent and well thought-out plan for doctoral study, and a good awareness of the place of his/her research within the current field. The submission must contain or accompany an analytical commentary, the equivalent of a thesis, which will normally be between 10,000 - 15,000 words. Where the submission involves a performance or exhibition, etc, a permanent record of the work should be submitted in the form of photographs, CD-Rom, DVD or other recorded material along with the analytical commentary.


Entry requirements

For a PhD you will be expected to devise an original research proposal. If you have a first or second class honours degree (usually a 2.1) or an equivalent qualification, you may be eligible to this course of study. All publications upon which the candidature is to be based should already be in publication and available in the public domain. Candidates must be graduates (or equivalent) of at least five years standing, and have already obtained a Masters degree, or be able to show evidence of having received equivalent research training or experience in their working environment. The usual requirement for postgraduate entry is International English Language Testing System (IELTS) 7.0, or the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) equivalent..
