Course summary

Study the smallest but most abundant organisms on the planet, with a particular focus on those that cause human disease, on this highly practical, hands-on course that offers fantastic laboratory facilities. Microbiologists study the various microorganisms with which we coexist. Many microorganisms cause serious human disease (referred to as ‘infectious disease’), whilst others have a positive impact on our health (such as many of the bacteria that live in our gut). To understand these complex relationships, we must first understand the microorganisms themselves. This course provides an in-depth understanding of microorganisms, and the background necessary to pursue a range of careers relating to microbiology. You should therefore study this course if you have an interest in microbiology, particularly in the context of human health and disease. Microbiology graduates are highly sought after in the NHS, industry and in research laboratories. Research Active Staff Microbiology is taught by enthusiastic academic and professional staff who will provide continuous support throughout your studies at Chester Medical School. The academic staff are research active and continually strive to promote research within areas of microbiology, in which they have published research findings and discussed their work at national and international conferences. You will have the opportunity to join a research team to undertake your research dissertation in the final year. We have fantastic facilities where you will be doing a lot of practical laboratory work, such as simulating a laboratory environment where you will gain hands-on experience.
