The course reflects the appropriate National Occupational Standards and Key Skills for the sector and is designed to foster life-long learning. The FdSc Sports Coaching programme will introduce you to a range of skills necessary for you to progress as a sports coach or P.E. teacher. You will explore the theory behind teaching and learning, the psychology of sports coaching and the pedagogy associated with the delivery of coaching and teaching sessions. The FdSc Physical Activity, Health & Well-Being programme is a great way for you to realise your aspirations of leisure management, client support and care or a move in to teaching. You will cover a range of physiological, nutritional and client based modules focusing on physical activity, leisure and healthy living. As a Foundation degree graduate in the field of sports coaching there are a number of job opportunities available to you including sports development and administration, sports coaching, teaching and instruction within a specific discipline, and sports management. Having completed your Foundation Degree you will be in a position to Top-Up your degree to a full BSc (Hons) Sport, Physical Activity qualification and/or potential entry to a two-year Top-up programme within Initial Teacher Education. The BSc programme will allow you to further explore your interest and conduct research in to your specialism and produce a final year dissertation. Students find this to be a great experience and opportunity to explore a specific subject with sport. Part time study is approximately 1 day per week over three years. Total 240 credits. Flexible study may be available by agreement with the Course Leader. Modules covered include - Level 4: Coaching Performance; Introduction to Coaching; Psychology for Sports Coaching; Coaching Preparation; Practical Coaching Experience; Human Performance Assessment. Level 5: Refining Coaching Styles; Performance Physiology in Sports Coaching; Nutrition for Sports Performance; Research Methods Investigative Project; Psychological Interventions in Sports Coaching; Developing Sport. Full time study is approximately 2.5 days per week over two years. Total 240 credits. Flexible study may be available by agreement with the Course Leader. Modules covered include - Level 4: Coaching Performance; Introduction to Coaching; Psychology for Sports Coaching; Coaching Preparation; Practical Coaching Experience; Human Performance Assessment. Level 5: Refining Coaching Styles; Performance Physiology in Sports Coaching; Nutrition for Sports Performance; Research Methods Investigative Project; Psychological Interventions in Sports Coaching; Developing Sport. Applicants for the part- time route will be required to either be in paid or voluntary employment in the Sports Coaching Sector with a nominated workplace mentor to assess work based learning assessment. There should be an allowance by the employer for study time and the flexibility to complete a work based learning project within the organisation. The aim is for the you to gain an invaluable insight into the industry and to apply various modules of the course in a practical setting. Work experience/placement expectations: 80 hours at level 4; 120 hours at level 5.
Teaching and learning methods include: lectures, seminars, workshops, practical sessions, individual, small and large groupwork, discussions, student-centred and distance learning. Work experience is a central part of the course. Our methods include: home study, workshops, lectures, seminars, practicals and work-based learning. The Professional Development modules allow you to identify claims for prior learning and experience (APL/APEL), develop key skills and to gain some essential study skills. During the course, you will have the opportunity to attend a recruitment event for the New York Red Bulls Soccer team. A variety of assessment methods are used including reports, exams, work-based projects, case studies, home study tasks, practical coaching assessments within a teaching & learning environment and presentations. Some assessment methods are undertaken individually, others in small groups.

Gym Instructor and Personal Trainer qualifications are desirable although not essential. Non Standard applicants are not expected necessarily to have formal qualifications. Applications are welcomed from persons who can demonstrate relevant work experience (including work in a voluntary capacity) and they may be admitted to the Scheme on the basis of non-certificated experiential learning. The Scheme actively supports claims for Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) and Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL). Bradford College has a well-established APEL and other credit policies with clear criteria offering both generic and specific APEL. These arrangements have been developed to meet the particular needs of foundation degree and mature students with no formal qualifications. The APEL process may facilitate fast tracking on to awards. We require a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Enhanced certificate for admission to this course.
