Course summary

This four-year course covers all the key areas of organic, inorganic and physical chemistry. You will be taught by academic staff who will feed your curiosity for chemistry, with small group tutorials to support your learning. You may recognise some of our staff from the popular Periodic Videos YouTube channel. You will gain experience in practical synthetic and analytical chemistry. Our modern labs and facilities enable you to put theory into practice. On the MSci programme you will work on an in-depth research project in an area of your choice. This project will develop not only your practical ability, team working and problem-solving skills, but also your literature and presentation skills. You can choose to do our research project in an area of chemistry that you are most interested in. This could be in green chemistry, medicinal chemistry, nanomaterials, spectroscopy, catalysis, photochemistry and much more. Our graduates are well equipped for rewarding roles in variety of industries, including the pharmaceutical, chemical, food and drink, and energy sectors. Graduate destinations include Boots, Cancer Research UK, GlaxoSmithKline and the NHS.

Modules

In the first year you will build up your pre-university studies through modules in core chemistry. If you do not have A level mathematics (or equivalent) then you will take the Mathematical Toolkit module to prepare you for this aspect of the course. In the second year, theoretical and practical modules further develop your knowledge and understanding. Optional modules will allow you to specialise in an area of chemistry that particularly interests you, such as atmospheric chemistry, and advanced calculus. In the third year you will study core chemistry in advanced and practical modules. A range of optional modules will allow you to focus on areas of particular interest, such as contemporary drug discovery. In the fourth year, you will work on an in-depth research project in an area of your choice.
