Course summary

Ranked 8th in the country for Nursing and Midwifery in the Best UK University Guardian League table (2022) and consistently achieving a high students’ employment rate, you can be confident that you will be equipped with the skills and knowledge when you graduate. Our Midwifery course is studied over three years full-time. On completion of the course you will be awarded with a BSc (Hons) Midwifery degree and registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). Our course is also BFI accredited by Unicef meaning that our Midwifery students will be equipped with knowledge and understanding of infant feeding to UNICEF UK standards. This standard is internationally recognised as a mark of excellence. You will have the opportunity to practice your midwifery skills in a simulated environment in our purpose built midwifery clinical skills laboratory. Each of the three years of the course comprise periods of theory and applied practice and you will be placed at one of three NHS Trust sites to gain practical experience: Kettering, Northampton and Milton Keynes. Career opportunities are wide ranging upon qualification, within and outside of the NHS. Initially after a period of preceptorship training and post-registration clinical experience, you can progress into fields such as clinical leadership, specialisms such as bereavement, teenage pregnancy and infant feeding, as well as education and research.   • Students must take all compulsory modules. Students who do not complete the Honours Degree will be eligible for an Ordinary Degree upon successful completion of a minimum of 60 Level 6 credits. These can be from any Level 6 modules, whether identified as compulsory or designated. The name of the Ordinary Degree will differ from that of the Honours Degree due to professional body requirements. Details can be found in the relevant Supplementary Regulations.

Assessment method

A wide range of assessment are used on the BSc (Hons) Midwifery degree including essays, workbooks, projects, both written and spoken examinations, care studies and presentations, many of which will be submitted and marked electronically / online.

Qualification requirements

A-level in Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology, Sociology, Health and Social Care or PE) or Extended Diploma or T-level in Science plus GCSE Mathematics and English Language at grade 4 (or C) or Functional Skills level 2 Application and Communication or equivalent qualifications required.
