Course summary

Students have the opportunity to pursue independent historical inquiry and to produce new historical knowledge; the course has no formal teaching and throughout the course students work closely with 1 or 2 academics who supervise their project; students researching new avenues of historical inquiry and coming up with their own analysis and conclusions based on their personal study of primary and secondary source materials.

Assessment method

These include a thesis which is then examined by other expert historians in their topic.


Entry requirements

For MA by research a 1st Class or 2.1 Honours degree or equivalent in history or a related subject; for PhD an MA or equivalent.
