Course summary

The BSc Mathematics with Statistics at Birkbeck will allow you to pursue an interest in statistics and applications such as data science while obtaining a broad education in mathematical sciences. You will explore theoretical aspects of the subject as well as statistical methods and modelling techniques. The flexible structure of the course also provides the potential to combine your studies with option modules from other subjects such as economics, accounting or management. Graduates of this mathematics with statistics degree have excellent skills in numeracy and logical thinking. Throughout your studies you will be exposed to analytical techniques that have a very broad range of applications, such as:

  • the creation of mathematical models of real-world scenarios, or
  • the use of statistics to analyse data and test hypotheses.
Employers place great value on training in mathematics and statistics. On average, graduates in these fields earn around 10% more than other graduates. Popular career choices for mathematics and statistics graduates include business or finance (around 35%), and teaching is also a popular choice (around 10%). Highlights

International applicants

If English is not your first language or you have not previously studied in English, our usual requirement is the equivalent of an International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic Test) score of 6.5, with not less than 6.0 in each of the sub-tests. We also accept other English language tests.

We welcome applicants without traditional entry qualifications as we base decisions on our own assessment of qualifications, knowledge and previous work experience. We may waive formal entry requirements based on judgement of academic potential If you have no previous Level 3 mathematics qualifications we recommend that you apply for the part-time evening study course over four years. Please contact the department for more information. FOUNDATION YEAR DEGREES Our 'with Foundation Year' route is designed to give you extra support as it provides you with an additional year (full-time) or two years (part-time) of supported study. This is an ideal route if you are returning to study after a gap, or if you have not previously studied this subject, or if you did not achieve the grades you need for a place on this degree. Once you successfully complete your Foundation Year studies, you will automatically advance onto the main degree.
