Course overview Teaching is an extremely rewarding and challenging career. Our course is designed to provide you with the knowledge, understanding and skills that you need to be an outstanding teacher. We aim to nurture teachers who are passionate about the development of their own and their pupils' learning. Why study this course with us? During the course, you will learn how to encourage young people’s mathematical skills through your subject specialism. Maths trainees enjoy a variety of educational experiences, the Subject Enrichment Week allows students to work with Primary and Secondary pupils to undertake ‘Mathamagic'; an engaging activity that will look at physical, practical, and collaborative mathematics activities and competitions. Applicants may apply for the Mathematics Enhancement Course to study prior to the PGCE in order to gain a deeper understanding of mathematics. "I learned so much, worked so hard and actually changed so much as a person, and I've got a job as well, what more could I ask?" (Quote from Maths Reflective Assignment) The course is designed to ensure you are confident in all basic national curriculum requirements. The government is planning changes to the NQT transition period from one year to two years. This will be introduced nationally from September 2021, but will operate in some areas of the country (e.g. the North East, Greater Manchester and South and West Yorkshire) from September 2020. Following the achievement of QTS, therefore, all of you entering into a job as an NQT from September 2021, or in the aforementioned regions from 2020, will be entitled to a 2-year package of on-going training and support as an NQT. These entitlements are enshrined in the recently published Early Career Framework and the government has promised additional funding and mentoring support for new entrants to the profession who are entitled to this 2-year NQT programme. As a university committed to the on-going training and professional development of new teachers, we are aligning our new Level 7 Masters programmes to the Early Career Framework and would be keen to continue to support schools and NQTs in the next phases of their careers.
Qualified teacher status (QTS)
To work as a teacher at a state school in England or Wales, you will need to achieve qualified teacher status (QTS). This is offered on this course for the following level:
Applicants will normally: hold or be expected to gain a minimum 2:2 honours degree (2:1 preferred) have GCSE grade C/grade 4 or above in English Language and Maths.
