This course will enable you to take your practice-based skills as a designer and maker to the next level as you establish your career. We will support you in developing your experience, using variety of materials to create high-quality objects that push boundaries, whilst working creatively and ethically. Key course features:
- Our teaching aims to engage you in key design principles and the working methods necessary to respond to and resolve design problems through research, conceptual thinking, design development and production appropriate to the discipline.
- You will learn to demonstrate the synthesis between theory and practice in the ability to generate and produce creative ideas, concepts, design sheets, sketchbooks and presentations, individually or as part of a team in response to self-initiated activity or live client briefs.
- Through live projects, commissions and collaborative projects, you will develop the enterprise, digital fluency, leadership and team-working skills necessary to become a professional artist.
- You will learn through a variety of methods, including individual mentoring, group demonstrations, academic and critical writing, lectures and collaborative opportunities. We encourage students to work across materials to nurture their practice. This exploration will also enable you to be flexible with skills in an ever-changing industry.
- A highlight of our calendar is Ceramic Wales, an annual event that takes place on campus and features exhibitions and demonstrations. This feeds into our curriculum, giving you project management experience and networking opportunities to work with professional artists.
- Although it is not essential for students to have access to a workshop/studio outside of the university, it is ideal for students to establish this during their first year of professional practice to ensure that they are equipped once they have graduated.
Modules
MODULES
- Locating Practice: This module allows the student to evaluate their existing practice and identify their target audience, including competitor analysis and venues to sell and exhibit work.
- Practice and Application: In this module, students will focus on production methods and refining their products to meet market expectations and limitations.
- Advanced Professional Practice: Students are expected to apply for identified exhibition and selling opportunities, and produce work of appropriate standard for these events.
- Practice and Entrepreneurship: This module focuses on high-quality production that evidences the application of skills and intelligence necessary for professional practice. Alongside the practical work, students produce a written report critically reflecting on their creative output including professional, progress and business planning.
Assessment method
Students will be assessed through a series of coursework (typically a portfolio), including evaluations of the practical work for each module.
Entry requirements
We currently require an initial degree in a relevant subject, classified as 2:2 or higher, or evidence of recent activity in the subject equivalent to these classifications as determined by interview. All applicants are expected to hold a good and relevant initial degree or provide a portfolio of their own work to demonstrate their knowledge of the subject and their artistic ability.
