*The objectives of this HND Art & Design (Graphic Design) course are as follows: * ● To equip students with the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to achieve high performance in the global graphic design environment. ● To provide insight and understanding into the diversity of roles, recognising the importance of collaboration at all levels. ● To equip students with knowledge and understanding of culturally diverse organisations, cross-cultural issues, diversity and values. ● To provide opportunities for students to enter or progress in employment in fashion, or progress to higher education qualifications such as an Honours degree in Graphic Design, or a related area. ● To provide opportunities for students to develop the skills, techniques and personal attributes essential for successful working lives. ● To support students to understand the local, regional and global context of graphic design. ● To provide students with opportunities to address contemporary issues facing the industry, and society at large, with particular emphasis on sustainability and the environment, recognising the role that graphic design plays in addressing these issues. ● To provide opportunities for students to achieve a nationally-recognised qualification within their chosen area of specialisation. ● To provide opportunities for students to achieve certifications. ● To offer students the chance of career progression in their chosen field, with particular emphasis on achieving management-level positions, professional recognition and beyond. ● To offer a balance between employability skills and the knowledge essential for students with entrepreneurial, employment or academic aspirations. ● To provide students with the context in which to consider professional ethics and their relation to personal, professional and statutory responsibilities within the industry. Modules
L4 / HNC Units x 8 (total 120 credits) U01 Professional Development (15 credits) The aim of this unit is for students to begin to define areas for personal professional development, in the context of a growing awareness of the broad scope of the creative industries. U02 Contextual Studies (15 credits) This unit is designed to introduce students to key cultural developments, practices and movements related to the history of art, design, visual and popular culture since 1900. U03 Individual Project (15 credits) Students will carry out and apply the knowledge and skills, developed through other areas of their studies, to complete and present an individual project. U04 Techniques and Processes (15 credits) Through this unit students will explore the critical facets of art and design practice that will enable any project. U12 Screen-based Practice (15 credits) This unit is designed to provide students with the opportunity to explore and develop the technical skills required to create artwork using screen-based practices. U13 Typography (15 credits) On successful completion of this unit students will appreciate some of the subtleties in creating and applying typography successfully and will have experienced and developed knowledge of fundamental skills necessary to progress to higher level study and commercial practice. U14 Graphic Design Practice (15 credits) The aim of this unit is to develop students’ confidence in managing a graphic design project through the full spectrum of the design cycle. At each of these stages, students will apply graphic design practices associated with the industry in order to create a coherent graphic communication product in a specialist area. U28 Communication in Art & Design (15 credits) This unit aims to support students in exploring communications techniques and methodologies relevant to a specific field of study. The ability to communicate visually is a fundamental skill for all specialist fields within the creative industries. L5 / HND Units x 6 (total 120 credits) U32 Professional Practice (15 credits) The aim of this unit is to support students in making the transition from study to employment or freelance work. U33 Applied Collaborative Practice (30 credits) This unit is designed to develop interdisciplinary collaboration and creative engagement through a project that brings together different skills from across the creative industries. U39 Advanced Graphic Design Studies (30 credits) This unit aims to provide students with an opportunity to engage in an extended study of the diversity of graphic design practice and to develop an in-depth project that will allow them to begin to establish their own approach to graphic design. U47 Branding & Identity (15 credits) The unit is structured to give students a clear understanding of brand and identity, and its impact in a commercial market place. Analysing case studies to understand the contextualisation of brand and identity will enable students to produce industry ready artwork and branding style guidelines for the application of design. U49 Art Direction (15 credits) The aim of this unit is to provide students with the opportunity to explore art direction through the development of a unified visual style in an advertising, marketing, fashion or editorial context. U60 Digital Animation (15 credits) This unit introduces students to the technical skills and knowledge required in digital animation. Students will develop the skills to plan, produce and publish their own digital animations effectively using industry standard animation software.
Assessment method
Through a combination of practical, lecture and work based learning, over the two years of the course you’ll study areas such as: Branding and Corporate Identity, Advertising and Art Direction, Lettering and Typography, traditional and digital Illustration, Digital Animation, Graphic Design techniques and processes, Contextual Studies and Professional and Collaborative Practice. All of these are via projects that have the maximum industrial context, and through a wide variety of field trips and our visiting practitioner ‘Walk The Walk’ talks. These will give you a flexible set of creative, analytical and organisational skills that are in high demand in the Creative Industries and beyond. Students on both years of the course also have opportunities to work on Live Briefs for real-world clients through our in-house design studio, ‘STUDIO PENDULUM’. Our HNC/HND students are based in bespoke graphic design studios, which are fitted with industry-standard Apple Macs and Adobe software – so no need to buy your own computer or software. You’ll also have access to the other facilities in the School of Creative Arts, including our Photography studios and darkroom, Fine Art and Fashion & Textiles studios, and a well-stocked Art & Design Library. Our aim is to create flexible, resourceful, creative visual communicators with strong transferable and interpersonal skills. Through all of the above, we’ll help you to develop: ● Critical thinking skills, which can be used to inform judgments and produce solutions to problems. ● The technical skills and understanding necessary for the effective realisation of creative and professional graphic communication concepts. ● An understanding of the broad contexts in which visual communication operates. ● The intellectual potential, practical skills and capabilities in preparation for employment, self-employment or further study at Level Combining all of these - together with developing your social media/digital presence - allows you to prepare a high-quality Portfolio of Work and join the ranks of our previous students working in the exciting and ever-changing Creative Industries!
