Course summary

The Higher National Diploma (HND) in Computing is a rigorous specialist vocational programme, linked to professional body requirements and with a strong work related emphasis. The programme is designed to focus on IT security and computing forensics to support secure use of IT for local companies and businesses. On the course you will have the opportunity to enhance your computing knowledge and practical skills to enable you to be an effective manager and provide a progress route into employment, University or to higher-level qualifications. You will develop, test and secure networks within a practical space developed to allow you to test your understanding. This two-year higher education course offers both theoretical and practical units combined with an extensive range of teaching and learning methods that enhance the learners knowledge and skill. Learners will develop an in-depth understanding of how to secure computer networks and understand and resolve threats. We will tutor students in how to use professional tools and programmes. You will be taught in a nurturing environment with lots of expert support from our experienced and industry qualified tutors. They will teach you through a blend of lectures, guest speakers, seminars, case studies as well as individual and group work. Special features of this programme include: You can progress onto a final top-up year and achieve a full degree at our Chichester campus. Opportunity to tailor your HND through optional units Small group sizes ensure you get the support you need to succeed You will be taught by an experienced teaching team whose expertise and knowledge are closely matched to the content of the modules on the course. The team includes senior academics, professional practitioners with industry experience, demonstrators and technical officers and guest speakers. After the course The HND in Computing allows progression into or within employment in the IT and computing sectors, either directly on achievement of the award or following further study to degree level. Students may wish to convert the BTEC HND into a degree by completing the top up year which is available at Chichester College or other UK universities.

Modules

Students achieve an Edexcel BTEC Level 4 HNC having studied 8 units totalling 120 credits. As a student of Crawley College, you will have access to all of our services, which includes study support, the Students Union and our library's online resources. Skills and experience gained Learners studying for Edexcel BTEC Higher Nationals in Computing and Systems Development will be expected to develop the following skills during the programme of study: • ability to integrate a range of concepts, knowledge and skills relating to computing and systems development • ability to apply complex theories to practical realistic work situations in the computing sector • independence of approach to study and the generation of computing evidence • ability to engage with complex and/or unpredictable situations in computing contexts • ability to take responsibility to manage and direct their own and others’ activities • insight and judgement in relation to the margins and consequences of error • research and investigative skills • responsiveness to change and ability to multitask • ability to innovate and work in a creative way
